The teams behind the original Tomb Raider remake, Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, have revealed the game’s infamous difficulty will be adjusted for modern gamers.
Speaking at a press event, Crystal Dynamics game director Will Kerslake said “part of reimagining a game right is adjusting that game evolving for modern player tastes.”
He’s speaking of course on the original game’s notorious instant-death bits like crushing blocks, environmental hazards, spike pits, and more – which combined with its limited saves made the game challenging.
The game director also pledged that despite tweaking the brutal difficulty it is “core to the Tomb Raider experience that there are puzzles in combat and traversal and death-defying action.”
Some notable things from the original game will still be in the remake, though. “You’ll see big rolling balls, and you know, the things that you expect in a Tomb Raider game are going to be there in spades,” he added.
Other fans are concerned about possible retcons to the game’s story, considering Amazon is spearheading a massive overhaul of the IP’s timeline. This includes an all-new game Tomb Raider: Catalyst and a live-action series starring Game of Thrones star Sophie Turner, the latter of which is meant to be the start of a new cinematic universe centered around Lara and the aforementioned game.
Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis is in development for Windows PC (via Steam), Xbox Series X|S, and PS5 with a release set for sometime in 2026.
