Tom Clancy’s Elite Squad to Shut Down October 4; Less Than a Year After Launch

Tom Clancy’s Elite Squad

Ubisoft have announced that mobile “military RPG” Tom Clancy’s Elite Squad will be shut down, just under one year from launch.

As previously reported, players take control of characters from the Tom Clancy video game universes; including Rainbow Six, Ghost Recon, The Division, and Splinter Cell- creating squads of five. Then they take them out in real-time shoot outs against other squads on maps and scenes familiar to the aforementioned games.

The game encountered some controversy, and had to have its opening cutscene altered. This was due the villainous organization’s propaganda posters being compared to Black Lives Matter.

Their symbol was a raised black fist, and their motives were to use chaos and destabilization to further their own agendas (which Black Lives Matter have been accused of). The raised fist has been used as a symbol of revolution and rebellion; including during the French Revolution, by communist political parties, the Black Power movement, ANTIFA, and more.

However, it seems the game failed to resonate with players. On the game’s official website, The Story Ends blog post states the game will be shut down. The game had launched August 2020.

“It is with a great deal of sadness that we are announcing we will no longer be releasing new content for Elite Squad,” the post explains. “Today’s update will be our last, and on October 4th, 2021 we will shut the servers down.”

This came after “exploring multiple options with our teams,” and concluding that the game was no longer sustainable. “We want to assure you all that we really gave it our best, especially with big updates like Season 2, and it was a truly rewarding experience to work with you, our passionate community!”

“We sincerely hope that you have enjoyed playing with us as much as we have enjoyed making the game and engaging with you all on social media and Discord. We hope that some of you stick around with us and have fun reaching level 70 and unlocking all of the soldiers you can before we say goodbye.”
