A new movie based on none other than cult classic game series ToeJam & Earl is now in the works.
The new report (via Hollywood Reporter) notes the new feature film is being produced by Amazon Studios and NBA player Stephen Curry’s media company, Unanimous Media, as well as Story Kitchen.
Originally created by Mark Voorsanger and Greg Johnson, ToeJam & Earl follows the titular alien rappers who come to Earth hoping to find a cure for a diseas plaguing their home planet, ridding it of rhythm, funk, and groove.
Hotel Transylvania 4 writers Amos Vernon and Nunzio Randazzo are penning the screenplay, Story Kitchen’s Dmitri M. Johnson and Dan Jevons (Sonic the Hedgehog) are co-producing with Curry and Erick Peyton from Unanimous, and finally Story Kitchen’s Mike Goldberg is also co-producing.
A synopsis for the new movie teases:
“Earth, their legends tell them, is the Paradise where the music that created their culture originated. Unfortunately for our heroes, not only do they wreck their ship, but they find that Earth is . . . well, not the haven they expected. But the music – that part was true. So begins their quest to find as much of that music as they can in the hope of saving their planet, and maybe ours as well.”
The original 1991 game got two direct sequels, ToeJam & Earl in Panic on Funkotron and ToeJam & Earl III: Mission to Earth, only to lay dormant for years.
The latest game in the series, ToeJam & Earl: Back in the Groove!, has been available across Windows PC (via Steam), PlayStation 4, Switch, and Xbox One. In case you missed it, you can find our thorough review on the game here.
