The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim has been re-released enough to where it became (and still is) a popular meme. Game director and living god Todd Howard even made a nod to the meme at this year’s E3. While people still question the number of ports, we finally have an explanation.

At this year’s Gamelab in Barcelona, Geoff Keighley had a panel with Howard in which they talked up Bethesda’s open world games. A discussion arose focused on persistent game worlds and continuously playing older games, where Howard finally explained (via Gamesindustry.biz) the ports:

“Even now, the amount of people who play Skyrim seven years later; millions of people every month are playing that game,” Howard replied. “That’s why we keep releasing it. If you want us to stop releasing it, stop buying it.”

So there you have it. If you want to stop seeing Skyrim released for literally every platform ever, people have to stop buying and/or playing it in the droves.

“Every year there’s a new idea we can’t do, and a new technology for something that excites us,” Howard said. “I’d say I want it to be sustainable. Eventually there will come a day where I’m not making games at Bethesda. Hopefully that’s a long time away. But I want to make sure that who we are, what the worlds are, what the company is, that’s sustainable far beyond me.”

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is currently available for Windows PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and the Nintendo Switch.
