Indie developer 3 Gnomes Games has released Toby’s Topsy Tale, the latest mascot horror game to capitalize on the popular subgenre.

Nowadays there are lots of mascot horror games, but frankly many of them are uninspired and do little more than rip-off Five Nights at Freddy’s or Bendy and the Ink Machine. Toby’s Topsy Tale looks more unique due to the merging of living food and Lovecraftian horror themes teased in the leadup to the game’s release.
Whether or not Toby’s Topsy Tale becomes the next big indie horror hit will depend on if it can attract more eyes from the streaming world, as that is where most mascot horror titles sink or swim. There does appear to be quite a bit of hidden lore to uncover, just from the little bits of footage gleamed from the trailer.

Toby’s Topsy Tale is a cute 3D platformer, with heavy elements of psychological horror, where you explore colorful worlds filled with quirky characters, dangerous enemies, and Lovecraftian nightmares that threaten to tear apart your concept of reality!

- A New Spin on 3D Platformers – In this fresh take on the genre, you’ll be sliding and bouncing and maiming as a little gingerbread man named Toby who is exploring a seemingly abandoned 1950’s inspired home to find answers as to why his creator’s mental health is rapidly declining. The game has a lot of the features you’d expect for gameplay in this genre (Double-jumping, Gliding, etc.), as well as a fair amount of things to collect, but also features some unique abilities such as a limited weapon attack and the option to fall flat on your face and stay there as long as you’d like.
- A Touch of Madness – Much of the game revolves around trying to maintain some form of sanity as you explore and collect to uncover the dark secrets that your creator is hiding. Can you keep pushing through the horrors to get answers? Or will you stay where it’s safe and ignore the evils lurking just below the surface? Up to you! Toby’s Topsy Tale contains multiple possible endings that you can unlock depending on your choices or how dedicated you are to solving the mystery.
- Customization and Unlockables – As a true collectathon, there is A LOT for Toby to find an collect (Trophies, Coins, Candy, Occult Pages, etc.) and doing so will allow you unlock new pathways, alternate endings, over a dozen skins for both Toby and his candycane, and even hidden abilities.
