Tides of Numenera Goes Turn-Based

Recently on Tumblr, the developers of Torment: Tides of Numenera created a poll wherein they asked gamers to choose whether they wanted the kickstarter-backed RPG to have turn-based combat or “real time with pause”. Ever the hot button issue in the hardcore CRPG community, the results of the poll were inconclusive. Though Turn based devotees technically won this argument with their side having accrued more votes, it was still close enough to cast doubt.

However, inXile has announced that regardless of the closeness of the poll’s results, the game would become exclusively turn-based.

This makes Numenera yet another in a very long list of turn-based CRPGs that have been or will be released within the coming years. With Shadowrun Returns, Wasteland 2, Blackguards, Divinity Original Sin, Frayed Knights, Underrail, Might & Magic X, Age of Decadence and the indefinitely delayed Chaos Chronicles all using their adherence to turn-based combat disciplines as a major selling point, it seems like the pendulum has swung back after almost two decades. Debate on the issue has been rather fierce online, with nearly every game’s forum getting involved.

Torment: Tides of Numenera is based off of Monte Cook’s tabletop RPG Numenera and is due sometime in 2015 for Windows, OSX and Linux operating systems.
