There’s been quite a lot of misunderstanding concerning The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and GOG over the past few months. Between the graphics controversy, the fear of the newly released GOG Galaxy client becoming DRM and the “check file” they are forcing launch day customers to download (In order to curb early piracy), CD Projekt has had their hands full dealing with the chaos on their forums. Which is probably why they’ve posted a very comprehensive FAQ that answers these questions.
This one in particular is meant to reassure gamers who are upset over the anti-piracy measure CD Projekt is taking. Some are already upset that you need an internet connection to validate the install, and while some see it as a slow move to DRM, the developers promise that it isn’t:
Q: Do I need Internet access to install the retail PC version of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt?
A: The initial, pre-premiere retail PC batch of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt needs to download a file from our servers to allow play. This file will either be downloaded automatically during installation process or you can choose to download it manually from a dedicated website. Since we have no DRM in the game, this is a security measure we needed to incorporate so the game doesn’t leak during the production process. No worries, the file will not be big. Copies of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt produced after launch will not contain this security feature.
They also mention that each retail copy of the game will include a code for a GOG digital-only copy.
