The Witcher 3 Has A New Trailer, And A Surprise: Two Playable Characters

Who saw this coming? CD Projekt RED have announced that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt will have two playable characters. That’s fantastic news.

The developers didn’t reveal who the second playable character is, but they did say that they’re featured in the new trailer, above. The second playable character will be a woman, I’m sure, so that means it’s either Ciri, Yennefer, or Triss. Speculate below, if you will.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is coming to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on February 24th, 2015. I wasn’t paying much attention until now, but as the release date nears and we find out more concrete information, I’m becoming more and more confident that this is going to be a milestone in CD Projekt RED’s history.

(As an aside, that’s a great new logo they have for the company. They probably spent a lot of money on it, and that was money very well spent.)

IT’s Ciri. I remember hearing with TW2 they were planning on continuing the series after 3 where you play as Ciri.

I figured as much. I think Yennefer would have been a more sophisticated option, but Ciri’s cool. Who doesn’t want to teleport around a battlefield? (That had better be an option.)

Do you get a choice or is it going to be forced, though?

That doesn’t really confirm it’s her though.

I’m in the camp that’s hoping it’ll be Yennifer, but Ciri would make more sense in this case, simply because it looks like she’d play pretty similar to Geralt, so they wouldn’t have to come up with an entirely different combat style and stuff.

Just posting this to say it’ll almost undoubtedly be Ciri.

For one, Ciri has a similar play style to Geralt, meaning that it wouldn’t be as hard for CD Projekt to do, as opposed to a ‘sorceress’.

Second, and probably more importantly, if you’ve read the original Witcher books that the games continued the story of, you’ll know that Ciri was the ‘main’ character alongside Geralt. She got the same if not *more* time in the books then any other character.

Because this game will likely focus a great deal on her story, I’d be surprised if we didn’t get to play her at some point.

(and as Carl B. said, CDProjekt Red have also stated in the past a desire to have actually have a Witcher game where you play as Ciri.)

Finally, Yennefer is a love interest of Geralt’s, alongside Triss. We have already been told that both are available to romance.

I think it would be rather strange if you were given the chance to play as one of them but not the other. I could understand if say, both were playable characters, but just one of them? Doesn’t sound like something that they would do, especially when they’ve stated that both women will be give “equal chances with Geralt”, and there’s quite a big emphasis on the choice you make between the two. It’d be like already trying to pick a favourite for the player.

It’s still not ‘certain’ if it will be Ciri, but I’d be very surprised if it wasn’t.

Regarding whether or not it will be forced, or a choice, I think it’ll likely be forced and be a set part of the story. I imagine it might only be for short periods though. CD Projekt Red have stated that you’ll play as Geralt the vast majority of the time…

and remember in TW2 controlling Saskia, Henselt etc? It’ll probably be something like that, if a little more involved.
