The Astronauts have announced the news – they’re bringing their mysterious, gorgeous looking story-driven game, The Vanishing of Ethan Carter, to Playstation 4.
The Astronauts founder Adrian Chmierlarz had this to say over on the PlayStation Blog:
“The Vanishing of Ethan Carter is a story-driven mystery game that focuses entirely on exploration and discovery, featuring no combat or explosions of any kind. If our game leaves any scars, you won’t be able to see them.”
You’ll step into the shoes of Paul Prospero, an occult-frenzied detective who receives the terrorizing letter from Ethan Carter in the beginning of the game. He comes to the realization that Ethan is in danger, and he quickly leaves for Ethan’s home of Red Creek Valley, only to find him vanished in the wake of a brutal murder.
Chmierlarz elaborated on the macabre story set within The Vanishing of Ethan Carter:
“As I hope you can see from this short description, we’re trying to mix pulp and horror into one cohesive experience. And if that makes you suspect we’re making this game inspired by the weird fiction stories and other tales of the macabre from the early 20th century, then you’re on the right track. Writers like Algernon Blackwood, Stefan Grabinski, and of course, the CEO of Cthulhu himself, H.P. Lovecraft have heavily influenced every layer of our narrative and world design.”
Players will be tasked with exploring the region of Red Creek Valley and interacting with the environment from a first person perspective. You’ll ultimately, and hopefully find the cause of Ethan’s disappearance, and you can do this “on your own terms and at your own pace.”
