With its just-launched Kickstarter campaign, The Sinking City 2 has not only succeeded in reaching its funding goal in a few days, it has doubled it.
There is still almost an entire month for it to collect more funds on Kickstarter, with some analysts anticipating it will reach a million dollars from the crowdfund platform before it leaves Kickstarter.
This isn’t too much of a surprise, given the popularity of The Sinking City (released in 2019 before being pulled from storefronts due to a legal dispute) and its cult following in the gaming world since then.
The Sinking City 2 is set in the flooded ruins of Arkham, and while still maintaining a Lovecraftian vibe and ethos, will be different than Oakmont from the first game due to the absence of normal (and abnormal) people going about their lives. There will be a lot of rowing and exploring old ruins, though the core gameplay mechanics from the first game are still in place.
Frogwares is a Ukrainian gaming company, which has led some to worry about the future of their games due to the ongoing Russian invasion. When they launched a Sherlock Holmes game on Kickstarter a few years ago, while the campaign was still a smashing success, there were messages from players worried that the game would be canceled due to possible Russian victories in the future.
These fears thankfully turned out to be unfounded, and the game launched in full on April 11, 2023. While the war with Russia has reached a stalemate that shows little signs of ending anytime soon, more players are backing The Sinking City 2 than backed Sherlock Holmes the Awakening.
