The Secret World Developer Announces Experimental PC Horror Spinoff, The Park

Despite having some financial issues, Age of Conan and The Secret World developer Funcom has announced an experimental single-player horror game for PC.

Dubbed simply The Park, the new horror title is described as “short and intense,” and its already set to launch sometime next month – just in time for Halloween. Featured above, you can view a brief teaser trailer for the game.

The game is reportedly set within the same universe as The Secret World, the characters, location, and story bits are all part of the MMORPG’s legacy. The Park is the result of a new business strategy that Funcom has announced, where they’re going to focus on “small, experimental, and innovative” games that put a focus on new platforms and gameplay concepts (virtual reality and augmented reality were cited here).

The Park is set in a creepy, seemingly abandoned amusement park “where a dark and sinister secret is waiting to be uncovered.” The developer goes on to describe the haunting atmosphere: “Most amusement parks are happy places, but not all of them.”

Funcom is hoping that be developing innovative games (some with existing IPs) for new and developing platforms, they can pull themselves out of financial issues. “Funcom’s ambition is to further explore how the company’s established universes can be drawn upon in other projects outside the MMO space,” the developer said in a press release.

Despite this game being the first in a new business venture for the company, Funcom did make a point in saying they don’t expect The Park to sell gangbusters. The game was developed to “gauge the market and to develop the team’s ability to create different types of games.”
