The Saami Council demands removal of cultural FFXIV outfit

Final Fantasy XIV FFXIV Far Northern Attire

The Saami Council has demanded that Square Enix remove the Far Northern Attire outfit from Final Fantasy XIV (FFXIV).

The Saami Council is a “non-governmental organization” that claims to represent Saami people across multiple nations. The particular outfit seems to draw inspiration from their cultural heritage.

The Council is admittedly transparent in their criticism of the clothing saying in a statement:

This is not about sensitivity or whether the depiction is appropriate.  These elements are Sámi cultural property and Square Enix has infringed on our rights, says President of The Saami Council, Áslat Holmberg.

Fans of the game on Twitter have been quick to criticize the organization for blatant profit-seeking.

Although the Saami Council says that their ownership of the cultural dress is a matter of fact, the only document they cite is an agreement with Walt Disney Animation Studios.

The Far Northern Attire is available on the FFXIVMog Station” cash shop for $18 USD.

Final Fantasy XIV is available now for the Playstation 4, Playstation 5 and Microsoft Windows (through Steam). You can check out our review of the latest expansion Endwalker here.
