The Long Dark is a Realistic and Gritty Take on the Apocalypse

the long dark art 1

The Long Dark is a first person survival simulator by Canadian based Hinterland Games. The game just sounds amazing and innovative on paper, but seeing how passionate the team is also helps their cause.

The story of The Long Dark begins with bush pilot William Mackenzie flying a routine mail delivery when suddenly, light beams flash across the sky. This causes his plane to lose power and crash into the northern forests below. Injured, alone, and ultimately stranded, you have to quickly learn to survive if you want to make it out alive.

One of the major differences between The Long Dark and other open world games is that combat is generally not recommended, and is usually lethal and terrifying – just like it is in real life. In the game you’ll be focusing on your survival skills, procuring fresh water, food, and of course – shelter. You’ll also meet survivors, in this type of scenario you’ll have no idea what to expect though.

The team at Hinterland Games is made up of industry veterans who have worked on a gamut of games, ranging from the God of War series, KOTOR, Warhammer 40K, Mass Effect, Red Faction, and so on. They all seem very passionate and willing to really make a mature, rewarding survival experience.

If you’re as excited as I am about exploring the quiet apocalypse, you can pledge at their kickstarter here.
