The King of Fighters XIV is Announced for Playstation 4

Despite the worrying acquisition of SNK Playmore by an external Chinese company, the beloved fighting game developer has announced The King of Fighters XIV for PlayStation 4 during this year’s SCEJA Press Conference.

The game sports a full-3D look, and is set to arrive in Japan sometime next year.

Further details were not confirmed, but you can view some more screenshots over on Famitsu.

Editor’s Note: We’ve added the trailer for The King of Fighters XIV to the article.

On the one hand I’m not sure about the 3D aspect of it, but on the other hand we can get Mai in 3D.

TL;DR – hands, Ds and Mai.

3D KoF just looks so wrong. Hope the gameplay at least remains intact

What Capcom does, so must SNK.
If Street Fighter V was cel shaded with 3d models, KOF XIV would be too.

A numbered KOF with 3d models feels wrong, but So Did a Street Fighter sequel with 3d Models…. I’ll reserve judgment.

Could they not have at least made it look more like Guilty Gear Xrd?

That art style… See, I really enjoyed Maximum Impact 3 and Regulation A. I find both of them good games… For the PS2. This is about to get a PS4 version, with those graphics? It looks like and HD version of MI!
And, the designs themselves… What happen?!? Oh my…

The final version will have pachinko based projectiles, don’t worry about that not being in the game my lovelies.

That’s the thing though, SF4 and 5 have so much style and soul put into their look. So did KoF13, which is perhaps my favourite fighting game of all time. Street Fighter 4 and Guilty Gear Xrd have proven that you can still have style when going to 3D — but this looks lame, honestly. They can do 3D, but it will need a bit of style if they can’t do photorealism.

Must say Arc System Works decision not to compromise the aesthetic of Xrd while going 3D was very well handled. Also how hard is it to make 3D look like 2D?
Also another case study but in animation: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vVkDrIacHJM

At the end of the trailer it does say “Game in development may change” Honestly the only thing that bothers me is Kyo looks like a 12 year old Shota boy…….if you know your anime porn you know what that means…..

I’m kind of reminded of that time when Capcom just straight up bought a Mega Man fangame because they had /nothing/ for his 25th anniversary. Seems like SNK wanted KoF to stay in people’s mind and just approached the first google hit of “KoF fangame” with an offer of a happy meal with a large coke and fries.

it looks terrible, actually worse than the last KOF
they should have stayed with sprites or gone for actual 2D animation like skullgirls
3D just doesn’t fit the franchise

in the end of the day sf still looks worse than it did before though even if the 3D is not as bad as it might have been
