The King of Fighters XIV Gets an Arcade Port

SNK Playmore has announced (via 4Gamer.net) an arcade port for The King of Fighters XIV.

While most Japanese fighting games will hit the coin-scene prior to consoles, SNK’s latest in the ongoing franchise is now hitting arcades. The game will support network play between various arcades across the country.

The arcade port makes use ot Taito’s (yes, they’re still around) NESiCAxLive 2 system, which enables the aforementioned network play.

Further details will be coming at next year’s Japan Amusement Expo, in February 2017.

    Cool. It’s a really fun fighting game even if the online scene is dominated by six or so characters.

    As someone who grew up in the era when arcade fighters got low res console ports, this reversal is totally bizarro to me.

    This and SFV getting arcade versions announced at the same time seems to confirm my earlier suspicions of Sony having paid to keep those games exclusive in Japan.

    Which to be quite frank is such a bizarre thing to even consider (as a Westerner at least); Sony perceiving arcades as such a threat to the PS4 that they moneyhat third parties for timed console exclusivity… or perhaps it’s them recognizing the downfall of consoles in general, and propping up theirs with whatever artificial exclusives they can get.

    Timed xclusives have been a thing for a while. And consoles and arcade aren’t usually considered to compete between themselves.

    Bandai Namco seems to think otherwise with their Dragon Ball Heroes and Gundam Vs releases. They have a balanced trend of infrequent console releases in comparison to their arcade stuff.

    I’m suggesting that Sony may have been pressuring Capcom to put the SFV Arcade release back so that people assume that no arcade release is likely and pick up the console release. I imagine that they would only win a small number of Japanese consumers for KOFXIV or SFV, but otherwise an arcade release this late does seem odd.

    Well, not just “pressuring” given that we already know Sony paid a sizable sum to get the early access title known as SFV as a console exclusive in the West. Makes me wonder what the going rate for each form of exclusivity is, especially given that arcades are the bigger scene for fighting games in Japan by far.

    Also makes me somewhat interested – if not also slightly concerned – to see what sorts of moves Sony might be able to pull once they’ll acknowledge PC as more of a competitor in our Western market as well.

    On a somewhat related note, this also seems to heavily imply that games with an “PS4 Console Exclusive” logo all have some kind of moneyhat/marketing deal behind them – with the logo actually being reserved as a promotional one just for these particular games, as otherwise it wouldn’t make sense that something like Neptunia VII doesn’t also get it.

    So basically everything from Playstation Experience we saw in the segment hosted by Gio Corsi of “Third Party Productions” (read “Sony Moneyhats”); from various indie titles to SFV, KoF XIV, Yakuza 0 and Ni-oh.

    Ni No Kuni II, with it’s deviant descriptor of “PS4 Console Debut” not appearing until much later into that show is making me reconsider the status of that game altogether, given that the same descriptor is also used for late PC to PS4 ports. Could that game actually be hitting NX – a handheld – first, and Sony’s console only after that?

    I appreciate the clarification, dude. Rather be totally wrong and corrected than think I responded to someone with an educated guess.

    Sony are truly innovators for bringing high profile Early Access releases to the ordinary consumer. I imagine that they will make their move to slow down PC releases sooner than later, Microsoft are pretty snug with the PC too while Sony barely have any foothold.

    It’ll be interesting even if outputting to see where the Sony Moneyhat line up goes from here out, but I don’t think the NX is likely to get Ni No Kuni 2 before the PS4.

    Even PS2 was guilty with inferior ports like Marvel Vs Capcom 2, Samurai Shodown 6, Arcana Heart 2 (one of the worst ports I’ve ever seen)…
