The Kickstarter Video for Strafe, a Violent ’90s Shooter Blast From the Past, is Amazing

We’ve covered a lot of Kickstarter games here on Niche Gamer, and the Kickstarter pitch video tends to go the same with most games: the aspiring garage indie dev looking to fund his or her dream game, the veteran dev using their pedigree to fund a bloated new IP, and so on.

However, the Kickstarter video for Strafe completely blew me away. Featured above, their pitch video isn’t so much a pitch video as it is a hilarious recreation of common 90’s movie and video game tropes. Seriously, you owe it to yourself to watch that piece of sheer brilliance.

The entirety of their Kickstarter page is filled with tongue-in-cheek humor, sure to make any ’90s kid at heart squeal with glee:

“In 2014, around 60 million people died on Earth. There is a low but persistent risk the STRAFE® team may also suffer untimely brutal deaths and be unable to deliver the game to backers.”

Here are the game’s hilarious feature bullet points:

  • BILLIONS of level possibilities with a unique level generated on every load
  • OCULUS RIFT – put yourself inside 100% virtualized “real” environments
  • Randomized enemies, monster closets and hidden secrets surprise at every turn
  • ÃœBER-GORE® Tech for ludicrously persistent gibs
  • Lifelike digital gravity
  • BLAZING fast gameplay and responsive controls
  • Realtime first person upright biped simulation
  • Weapon upgrades and power-ups that’ll change your play style
  • Unsigned 32-bit colors!
  • Colored lighting!
  • Ultra large resolutions with a unique 16:9* screen ratio (*only in 2D mode)
  • Multi dimensional polygonal meshes derived from over a thousand unique vertices
  • STRAFE®!

The purpose of a Kickstarter campaign is to “sell” you, the potential backer, on the game. The developers at Pixel Titans have definitely succeeded in that regard, and it’s certainly hilarious to see the completely insane PC marketing of old come out again with this game.

You can find Strafe on Kickstarter here, and you might want to consider backing the game, as the rewards include the likes of POGs and AOL icons. Seriously.

[Editor’s note: below is a sneak peek at the touted “ÃœBER-GORE® Tech“.]
