So you can file this one under the completely unexpected – the girls from Japanese idol group AKB48 are joining the cast in Super Smash Bros. this month – but not in the way you’re thinking.
The reveal comes via the Mii creation of Mayu Watanabe, one of the members of AKB48. After being created, she enters the battle as a Mii fighter, alongside her idol colleagues Yuki Kashiwagi (bottom left) and Minami Takahashi (far bottom), who are also available in the game.
Following her entrance in Super Smash Bros., she quickly begins to exchange blows with Mario, until it finally concludes with an enormous AKB48 versus Nintendo battle royale. To be clear, these are not “playable characters” so much as they’re simply Mii’s that are customized to look like the various girls of AKB48.
Super Smash Bros. is launching on the Nintendo 3DS this October 3rd, while the Wii U version isn’t coming until sometime this winter.
