Krafton have announced third-person survival horror game The Callisto Protocol; a game set in the same universe as PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds.
The game is the first title by developer Striking Distance Studios, who include developers who worked on Call of Duty and Dead Space. Many have already pointed out the game’s clear inspiration from the latter. This continues with the developer’s CEO Glen Schofield- one of Dead Space’s executive producers.
“I’m looking forward to really trying to make the scariest game on next-gen platforms [and PC],” Schofield said to IGN. “From what I hear- it’s hard to be the creative and talk nicely about it- but from what I hear… [Dead Space] was one of the scarier games of [its generation] and I want to do the same on next-gen, or what’s considered now the current-gen.”
In further discussions with IGN, a spokesperson for the developer stated the game was set in the same universe as PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (developed by Krafton subsidiary PUBG Corporation). As noted on The Callisto Protocol‘s official website the game is set in 2320, while PUBG is set in modern times.
Schofield explained to IGN how Striking Distance was formed under PUBG Corporation, and how the project was designed to expand PUBG‘s story. However, he emphasizes the game is a third-person survival horror game rather than a battle royale.
“The funny thing is, I came in with this story when I went and met with the PUBG people for the first time and started talking about [The Callisto Protocol] and building a studio. I presented this game to them, and so what we did was we made it fit within the PUBG storyline.”
“You want to see your character [in the third-person horror genre] and you want to see you going into danger. You want to see yourself and what happens to you during the course of this… As you get blood on your suit.”
We shall keep you informed as we learn more. The Callisto Protocol launches 2022 for Windows PC and unannounced consoles. However, as Schofield stated the team’s goal was to “make the scariest game on next-gen platforms,” that would include the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
