Tesla wants their cars to be compatible with Steam

A new bit of news that will excite folks is that Tesla wants their cars to be compatible with Steam, Valve’s digital PC gaming behemoth.

News that Tesla wants their cars to be compatible with Steam comes from our spaceman meme-loving automobile-making adopted son Elon Musk, who tends to tease various developments at his companies through is personal Twitter.

“We’re working through the general case of making Steam games work on a Tesla vs specific titles,” Elon said on Twitter. “Former is obviously where we should be long-term.”

The Steam-related followup from Elon came after he replied to CD Projekt RED’s next-gen release of Cyberpunk 2077 complete with its big update, which he commended for being a great game. A fan replied asking when that updated version of Cyberpunk 2077 would be available in Tesla cars, like the original version of the game.

Elon’s reply confirms their team is looking at having Steam itself compatible with Tesla’s operating system, versus individual releases like Cyberpunk. Each Tesla vehicle has a center dashboard display that you can actually play video games on – but obviously not while driving.

It’s worth noting Tesla OS is Linux-based, as is Valve’s SteamOS, so it would make sense the two would probably go well together and with Valve’s robust Proton compatibility they could theoretically run most Windows-based games that way.

The new “plaid” Tesla Model S comes with AMD graphics cards that are capable of high-end, modern video games like Cyberpunk 2077.

This could be an option for users still unable to buy new CPUs or GPUs in 2022, as shortages could continue into 2023 and beyond – albeit a very expensive way to get a new GPU.
