Team17 cancels Worms NFTs shortly after their reveal

Team17 cancels Worms NFTs

Within a day or so of their big NFT announcement, publisher Team17 cancels Worms NFTs amidst mostly negative reactions to the bizarre announcement.

“Team17 is today announcing an end to the MetaWorms NFT project. We have listened to our teamsters, development partners, and our games’ communities, and the concerns they’ve expressed, and have therefore taken the decision to step back from the NFT space,” the company said in a statement provided to Niche Gamer.

The shift to support NFTs was widely panned by fans and even indie developers under their umbrella, with indie developer Aggro Crab (Going Under is published by Team17) said they would no longer work with the publisher unless they cancelled their plans.

Popular voice actor Troy Baker was also on the receiving end of mostly negative criticism when he bizarrely announced his own NFT partnership, only to cancel that partnership abruptly as well. Sega was also looking to implement NFTs of some kind but once fans voice their concerns, they backpedaled a bit saying they won’t pursue it if the move feels like a pure money making scheme.

Other larger companies like Ubisoft have doubled down on their NFT adoption despite mostly negative reactions – with one Ubisoft exec saying critics of NTFs just “don’t get it.” Square Enix president Yosuke Matsuda is also hopeful for NFTs to be more widely accepted, saying he hopes their company can possibly offer them in the future. Konami, on the other hand, went and sold a bunch of Castlevania-branded NFTs to celebrate its 35th anniversary without batting an eyelash.
