Tales series character designer Mutsumi Inomata dies at 63

Mutsumi Inomata

Mutsumi Inomata, a longtime illustrator and animator that worked on many of the Tales of games and various anime productions, has tragically died at age 63.

News of Inomata’s passing was confirmed on social media by her sister, noting she passed away roughly a week ago on March 10th. A cause of her sudden passing wasn’t given.


Mutsumi was the main character designer for many of the Tales of games starting with 1997’s Tales of Destiny, followed by: Tales of Eternia, Tales of Destiny 2, Tales of Rebirth, Tales of the Tempest, Tales of Innocence, Tales of Hearts, Tales of Graces, Tales of Xillia, Tales of Xillia 2, Tales of Zestiria, and finally, Tales of Berseria.

Inomata was active as an illustrator and animator since the 1980s where she got her start as a character designer and animator for Kaname Productions. She worked on a number of classic titles ranging from Windaria, Urusei Yatsura, City Hunter, and even Mobile Suit Gundam.
