System Shock Remake Officially Announced, System Shock 3 a Possibility

system shock 11-12-15-1

We’ve learned that a System Shock remake is officially happening.

The news comes via an interview with Fastcompany and Night Dive Studios founder Stephen Kick. Night Dive acquired the full rights to the franchise, and are planning an entire remake of the original game.

Kick is working alongside the game’s original concept artist to reimagine its themes and aesthetics.

“Seeing the difference between his artistic abilities back then compared to now, and his ability to reinterpret those ideas, it’s just been really exciting for us,” Kick said in the interview.

Finally, the plan is to release a console version for the game alongside its expected PC version, making this a first for Night Dive Studios. Kick even teases a System Shock 3 down the line, but he said they’ll need a bigger publisher for this to happen.

They could easily go and turn system shock in to bioshock.

It needs a remake because it’s not a smart game for smart people like me.

SS3 please. Make it happen 2k. Just don’t let Ken Levine near the gameplay department.

Got chills when I read this, System Shock is one of my favourite series (with SS2 sitting comfortably as my 3rd favourite game ever). I hope they don’t screw it up

Also console version = me owning a physical copy of System Shock = Hype

Honestly if they did it in System Shock 2 format/engine it’d be great, if they go to Bioshock 1/2 it’d be kinda eh and/or feel… weird perhaps? But if it goes into Bioshock Infinite it’d be thrown into the trash and forgotten immediately.

    2K?
They werent even mentioned, and I dont want them to touch this franchise, Bioshock was already pretty underwhelming for me. and after Infinite, Evolve, and GTA I dont want them anywhere near anything else.

“Consoles”, you better make a PC version first and a console port later Kick.

I aint touching a dumbed version of a game I love.

I trust Night Dive, and I hope they deliver with the System Shock remake.

It’s an FPS not an RTS or cRPG, the only “dumbing down for console” that’s necessary is using a controller instead of a mouse

That’s already dumbing down a lot. The mouse plays a lot into the System Shock games (a reason why none of them were ever ported to consoles), as well as the keybinds.

Ok let’s run through this. I already said no RTS and cRPGs because those ones are obvious so removing XCOM, Witcher and C&C

-Deus Ex: HR was fucking fantastic
-Crysis, CoD and BF were always bad, slow, “dumbed down” console tier shooters
-Bioshock was made by a different studio to System Shock and so blaming “hte consoles 11!!!11!!1” is a bit of a stretch when one could just say it was 2Ks fault for sucking compared to Looking Glass

Wow, Night Dive Studios is on a roll. I can’t believe they actually acquired the System Shock IP. While I’m excited for them expanding into the console realm, I can’t help but worry that this will hurt the design with how limited consoles are. I really hope I’m wrong and this remake and a potential SS3 aren’t hampered by console support.

The original Crysis was absolutely nothing like your typical console shooter. It definitely suffered from being put on consoles. The Battlefield series also got worse as time went on with increased console focus.

The original Crysis was a Predator Simulator sandbox. The following titles were standard console shooters.

While I’m happy to hear we might get a sequel, I think it will be easier for them to fuck it up than do the series justice, especially by aiming for consoles.

I’m more interested in the remake, since they already have a solid foundation to build upon and not screw it up. Still possible they might fuck it up anyway.

I have. It’s in first person. You shoot things. Just because it has other aspects doesn’t really change that. And none of those other aspects wouldn’t work on console. Which is why I said “it’s not an RTS or cRPG”. 2 genres that have elements which make them not work right on console

Would it be harder to control a game like System Shock without a mouse? Yes. Would it be borderline impossible and a waste of time like playing a complex RTS on console? No

“Deus Ex was fantastic” true, still cant reach the heels of the original and its obviously consolized

“CoD, Crysis and Battlefield were always bad” bullshit, slow paced isnt bad, Quake, UT and Doom are great but shouldnt be the only way to make a shooter, those games did what they meant to do very well

2K did not make Bioshock, it published it, Irrational developed it and had core Looking Glass studio devs including Kevin Levine.

Consolization doesnt mean consoles are bad and its games are bad, it means PC exclusive games have to conform with a game that is inferior to its predecessor because said predecessor fid not have console limitations in mind, that includes controls and hardware.

Take an example: Dragons Dogma is a great fucking game, its a console exclusive and had its limitations in mind, its a great fucking game and I cant wsit for January.

Stop being so defensive. about your platform when the platform isnt even the problem itself, you look like a fucking idiot by doing so.

Hm, this pretty much explains why GoG just got the first one released. Not being snarky though or saying that’s a bad thing).

The games were great, good to see a remake coming. Curious about a console version… On one hand, they were very much PC (mouse/keyboard) point & click games, but on the flip side, Bioshock was kinda a spiritual successor to the genre, and it was great on consoles, so we’ll see.

Im hardly being defensive, im not even a console fan and am switching to PC next month, I just felt like making a point (which it seems youve gone and made for me anyway)

Consoles arent the problem. Appealing to casual audiences is. A game like System Shock could easily work on console

A kindred spirit. Always thought Ken Levine could create a world and characters really well, but was terrible as a director and game designer. Better off in the producers chair. Sometimes you have to know your limits.

SS is basically a sci-fi version of Ultima Underground. It’s an exploration RPG.
