Nintendo has confirmed the Nintendo Switch 2 won’t have an achievements system like many of its competitors’ hardware and platforms.
While rivals Microsoft, Sony, and Steam have had their Achievements and Trophies systems mandated for all games for years now, Nintendo has decided to not include such a system on the highly-anticipated Switch 2.
News that Switch 2 won’t include an achievements system came via an interview with Nintendo vice president of player and product experience Bill Trinen, who simply said “Nope.”
Nintendo is embracing a bit of modern gaming with the exciting new GameChat feature, which functions natively in the Switch 2 user interface and lets games finally voice and even video chat right from the console itself. During the original Switch’s reign, Nintendo relegated voice chat to their smartphone app.
It’s worth noting that Nintendo is toying with an achievements system of sorts with the Switch 2 Edition re-releases of both The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, which will have their own achievement lists, though it’s limited to the new Zelda Notes App.
That new Zelda Notes App will actually be a part of Nintendo’s existing Nintendo App, and will let players track the number of shrines they’ve completed alongside other metrics. So in a way, Nintendo is a couple steps away from probably including achievements natively in their console UI.
The Nintendo Switch 2 is set to launch on June 5th, with a suggested retail price set at $449.99 in the USA / 49,980 yen (Japan region-lock) or 69,980 yen (Japan region-free) / €469.99 in Europe.
