Supposed Gay Conversion Scene in Fire Emblem Fates Being Removed from Western Versions

fire emblem fates 07-06-15-1

We’ve learned (via Nintendo World Report) that a controversial scene from the upcoming western release of Fire Emblem Fates is being altered, if not outright censored entirely from the game.

The scene involves a female character, Soleil (picture above), and what many websites previously coined as a “drugging/gay conversion” scene. “In the version of the game that ships in the U.S. and Europe, there is no expression which might be considered as gay conversion or drugging that occurs between characters.” a Nintendo representative e-mailed us this morning.

The shortened version of her entire story arc is as follows:

Soleil easily gets hot and bothered around other women, fearing her ability to be “strong and cool” as a soldier. If you pair her with the male protagonist, a support conversation sees him use magic powder on her without her consent, making men appear as women and women appear as men. She winds up falling for the female version of the protagonist, and ends up being eligible to be proposed to from his male form anyway.

It’s worth mentioning we still do not know her official sexual orientation.

Nintendo did not specify how the scene would be changed, or if it would be censored completely.

Does this mean the naughty dialogue and strip-tease mechanics will remain in the game? Probably not, however we unfortunately won’t know how much of the game has been gutted out for western audiences until it ships.

How do you feel about Fire Emblem Fates being censored? Sound off in the comments below!

This year, I made a resolution to stop spending so much money. Good to see Nintendo is making this goal possible by making their products as unappealing to me as possible.

Jokes aside, I’ll wait for further news, but Nintendo being what it is today, I’ve pretty much stopped holding out hope.

This is the point where I should be shocked and disgusted by Nintendo’s actions but I’m not considering how common it is for them now… and I’m scared to hell that this is now the usual.

Lame. 0/10. No matter the content, I don’t buy censored trash for no other reason than political correctness from a company who thinks censorship = localization. Fatal Frame Maiden of Dark Water was bad enough, might as well go back to making grey sweat in Mortal Kombat, Nintendo.

I hate the idea of that a LOT.
i don’t want it censored but the entire premise of that squicks me the fuck out. doesn’t mean it’s okay to censor but holy shit would i avoid that like the plague. should it be left in? yes.
do i think there would be a shitstorm if they left it in? yes.

do i think the original content is at all morally okay? not at all, especially since there seems to be zero consequence. i’m really bothered by that whole premise.
but they shouldn’t have taken it out just cause i’m weak

it’s not really fucked up, just stupid use of tropes, basically the girl acts like she swings both ways (she’s straight) to piss off her dad, to the point where by reflex she faints when she’s near a cute girl, which is bad in the battlefield, so the MC gave her the magic powder which does exactly what was written to help her get used to it (but she ends up falling for him)

It’s a really horrible scene to have in the game i’m amazed it was ever in the game in the first place. Seems very bizzare. Can’t say I wanted it removed but yeah it’s pretty messed up and not at all surprising.

Can somebody tell me how it’s gay conversion if she fell in love with the female version of the protagonist to later discover she was a he but she decided she loves the person anyway?

It’s weird but not exactly gay conversion or at least what I think gay conversion is.

  21. MGNoxa

Based on what I know the powder is used without consent but not with the intention of making her fall in love with the male protagonist, it was to help her realise she can be around women and not get all nervous.

  22. Gale
    January 21, 2016 at 7:49 am

Essentially, it isn’t gay conversion. At all.

  23. MGNoxa
    January 21, 2016 at 7:50 am

Yeah especially when the powder was only used to make her realise she can be around women and not get all nervous. It was never intended for her to fall in love with the female version of the male protagonist.

Thanks tumblr. This is your fault. All your fault. If it wasn’t for that stupid ass Tumblrette misinterpreting the scene, we wouldn’t be in this mess. And now that Nintendo has an official Tumblr account, you’re gonna fuck them up even more now.

And, even though the anon didn’t source it, rumors are swirling stating that the fan translation for Fates is getting censored too.

  25. bateruchan
    January 21, 2016 at 7:53 am

it rides on the premise of “the right guy can fix that pesky lesbian”. it’s a VERY fucking common idea even in the real world (a lot of lesbians get the “my dick can change that, sweetheart”/”you just haven’t found the right guy/dick yet” line).

it touches VERY close to that premise.
it may not exactly be that, but it DOES imply it (“I saw countless people as women… but the only one to make my heart throb was you, Kamui” …even though she’d been made to literally get weak-kneed and faint multiple times before from cute girls). it’s not as direct, but i can definitely see where offense could show up to people. it edges on touching a little too close to home.

I am explaining why some people would be offended.
gay people get these “oh, but you just have to meet the right [guy/girl], that’s all” lines ALL the time, and if a premise runs right off the rails with that (“but she just met the right guy, guys! th-that’s all! i-it doesn’t harken back to th-that at all!” yeah whatever, ok) it does conjure up that ‘it takes the right one to convert you back into a good straight girl/boy’ shit really fast.

just explaining to those who seem to not get it (and i would understand why, if you’re straight and have never had this thought/never been approached with this thought).

  33. bateruchan
    January 21, 2016 at 7:59 am

it STILL harkens, albeit unspoken, to the idea of “well, the right guy can turn that pesky lesbian straight”. and it seems like many commenters here have (thankfully) never thought that before, and have never been approached by anyone with that mentality.

it is a VERY real mentality, that gay people can be ~converted~ by the ‘right person’ if we ‘just keep looking’.

i’ve read the pastebin. i understand the text, but that didn’t stop me from feeling really shitty about the entire premise of this situation. it just hits way too close to ‘the right man will make you want dick'(/’the right woman will make you less of a faggot’) premise, even if those exact words aren’t spoken.

again, i’m not asking for censorship, but i will express that yes, it does bother me a lot. but, i also think creators are free to do with that what they will, and if it bothered me enough, i would simply not approach that girl (since i believe we’re still ‘straight only’) or would simply not buy the game due to my personal distaste. as it stands, i absolutely do not want to buy the game due to censorship, which is something i find much worse.

  34. Tusheer
    January 21, 2016 at 8:00 am

i even say in another comment it SHOULD NOT be censored because of my personal weakness.
so instead of sitting there saying HURR U TRIGGERED BRO?? how about you just understand i’m trying to shed some fucking insight on the situation and WHY people would be bothered, rather than just shouting TRIGGERED! SJW!! N O T TRUUUUEEEE! because, quite frankly, people’s interpretation is relevant, and you DO NOT DICTATE how people see things and how they FEEL about said things.

it’s called interpretation. EVERYONE will interpret the scene and dialogue differently. i can absolutely see how someone could take it this way.

Since this is the first comment, I’ll try to steal the spotlight to tell you guys there are fan translations (yes, plural) of Fire Emblem If.

The thing is, you need to pretty much pirate Fire Emblem IF (pun intended) want to have this translation, or at least, have your n3DS or o3DS properly setup for CFW usage.

Anyway, besides that, I have to say that you should avoid, or at least, try to see for yourself if you’re ok with the Selene’s Forest translation, since I heard they WILL censor this conversation and maybe others, but it’s not a given (although, the forums there do not look good).

What I mean by them not looking good is that some there are pro-censorship, arguments like “They’re localizing for the main demographic of this game” and “It’s ok, Fire Emblem wasn’t meant for perverts” are thrown around.

AKA “NoA is trying to do something about the quality of the support conversations specifically for NA/EU” which has many retarded and wrong implications. They’re doing this to lower the criticism of the SJW side, as usual. Since Nichegamer and other news outlets that can be trusted, have posted how this support conversation was never what the mainstream media said it to be.

  44. Tusheer
    January 21, 2016 at 8:10 am

interpretations are fine if the creators made it vague, but considering that the creators made it clear in the game that the whole support storyline for her is to cure her being unable to focus (and faint) when cute women are around, not curing homosexuality, it never was about that. You’re making a mountain out of a falsified molehill

Serene’s Forest is filled with pro-censorship idiots trying to justify this whole shit with:
“They’re doing this to make the convos of quality for NA/EU”
    “Fire Emblem isn’t for perverts”
“They’re doing this for the main demographic guys”
“They should have never included some types of relationships”

But, there’s also a GBAtemp translation team, which I believe is different from the Serene’s Forest one.

Well, expressing one’s displeasure with something is, more often than not, a call for either a change of product’s content, or an attempt to purchase a different product entirely. People don’t simply express such displeasures for nothing.

  63. bateruchan
    January 21, 2016 at 8:22 am

so, what, more exposure to just… cute girls couldn’t have done that?
what was the point of the nonconsent powder? it’s contrived as all shit.

you can say that all you want, but when you hear the same shit your whole life, then kind of see it in action (because it’s vague as all shit, it’s contrived and it’s completely unnecessary) it hits pretty close to home.

    that’s it.
NO they should NOT have censored it, for the 100th time.
however, i can absolutely see why it would be offensive to some. that is not a cry for bottom-barrel censorship (that won’t do a good job at all of replacing it anyway), that is explaining to people here why some would get offended.

yes, it bothers the fuck out of me.
like i said in other posts, i hate the idea, i would avoid it at all costs and/or simply not buy the content as i do not like it. because i’m a mature adult, and if i’m bothered, i’ll simply choose not to consume the media. simple.

as it stands, i have no plans to buy BECAUSE of censorship, so the likelihood is, is i would buy, then avoid that entire plot line altogether. it is tasteless and is simply for creator’s wishes. again, that’s fine, that’s their choice, and i do not think it should be censored. HOWEVER, it is perfectly within my rights, and the rights of people offended, to talk about it negatively (tho, again, i don’t think they should have their way all the way to the censorship pen) and to cause some outcry. they are perfectly allowed to their freedom of speech, as well, as am i.

i DO NOT condone them using their freedom of speech (and press) to cause censorship (self- or not).

and i stress this because it seems like posters here are missing my point and thinking i condone censorship because of my sensibilities. i am merely trying to explain why some would be offended.

    that is all.
i do not buy censored games (provided i know about the censorship beforehand, i try, but i CAN miss things and learn from my mistake down the line). i do not like people fucking with the creator’s intentions, as a creator myself. however, i also feel like there’s this mentality here that “only i am allowed to feel and all these ~pussies~ are overreacting”, and it’s a little ridiculous. it comes from, i would hope, a lack of understanding… and all i aim to do is explain why there is a misunderstanding there from the point of view of someone who has dealt with, time and time again, “oh, bateru, just keep looking for the right girl, she’ll cure your faggotry”, essentially.

if i fail, well, oh well.
but i hope at least one people understands why some people would be (fairly and rightfully) offended–while they still should not be able to suppress speech, creativity and content.

one CAN be offended by content, while not demanding it change for them. Please understand my point here.
I AM heated, and I AM bothered, yes, but i do not condone this censorship. and from reading the text, i do not feel the “vagueness” is a permissible excuse to tell people they’re “feeling wrong”, because it very easily can be interpreted as “that pesky lesbian” shit that every lesbian gets at least once in their lifetime.

  64. Gale
    January 21, 2016 at 8:22 am

If it helps with your stance on the whole ‘gay conversion’ thing, this isn’t the only support where she gets married to a man. And it’s the only where where she has anybody help her with anything.

  80. bateruchan
    January 21, 2016 at 8:34 am

no, one can detach themselves from their displeasure and the notion of changing something.

    i am displeased, yes.
but it is the creator’s desire and i have no intention to change that. i stand for creators first and myself second, in situations such as these. that creator is not me, and i am not them, we are individuals and i should have no part in their decision-making.

i am allowed to interpret their writing, as is anyone else.
i am allowed free speech, as is anyone else.
and i am allowed to feel and react, as is anyone else.

maybe, to you, my reaction is wrong, maybe overblown (sure, i can get that, as it is a personal topic to me), but i’m still allowed that emotion.

but that emotion, that reaction, is individualistic and should be kept there. it is an emotion and a reaction–and that emotional reaction does not extend to stifling the creator of the content i reacted to. just as much as my reaction cannot, for example, turn violent (as it impedes on the rights of others’ safety), my emotional reaction should not be the law (as it impedes on the rights of others’ freedom of expression and speech).

but i will not, at all, EVER, say that i, and others, are not allowed to react emotionally, be it negatively or positively. because that, imo, also is a breach of freedom of expression, and that people shouldn’t be allowed to talk about their reaction is a stifling freedom of speech.

i hope i am clear with this reply.

  90. bateruchan
    January 21, 2016 at 8:47 am

exposure therapy is a thing, and that’s exactly what the point of the powder was to be: to make her see cute girls more and to have to approach them, though.
    it was powder-based exposure therapy.
but no, exposure therapy is the best way to deal with anxiety disorders in general.
it could be handwaved away with main character simply getting one of the less cute girls to be paired with her (platonic) then slowly having other girls paired with her to the cuter ones in the ranks, until she is cured of her fainting issue. the powder is completely contrived and unneeded.

again, i’m not demanding that kind of censorship, but it’s a suggestion to how i may have approached it myself, while keeping her issue intact. if i was on the localisation team, i’d be very open about NOT doing exactly that suggestion, but, say, if i made my own game, it’s how i would approach it. (but i feel like, giving a suggestion digs my grave here, and now i expect backlash)

even if it’s not about curing homosexuality, it can absolutely be interpreted that way. it depends on the viewer. i imagine many straight people won’t see it that way (as they don’t have to deal with it) but many gay people may come away from it thinking it’s tasteless at best, or offensive at worst. i’m not sure where i fall on that tightrope. i know i’m bothered, but not quite how bothered i am right now.

and some gay people may shrug and say my reaction is overblown.
    and that is fine too.
they’re not wrong, i may just feel, personally, as they may have had a much easier life than i (and for that, they are very lucky and i’m quite envious)

because it is vague, it’s left to interpretation, the morals/ethics behind this scene.
and people will talk about those morals/ethics freely.

i think that it should be left in as a talking point, if nothing else. it’s offensive to some of us, absolutely, but as is many other things. i think that, however, if people find it very offensive, they should show that with their wallets and simply choose to pass this game. period. and that is their right as a consumer to do so.

  91. Gale
    January 21, 2016 at 8:47 am

Well, essentially there’s not really any situation of ‘gay conversion’ or turning the lesbo straight, etc etc.

The entirety of Soleil’s character is a widely-used anime trope of “The straight girl that constantly hits of cute women but is not actually a lesbian”. It’s used across numerous comedy anime, harem anime, games, etc. It’s usually shit, but eh.

Her character is also a female version of her dad, Inigo/Lazwald in the previous game Fire Emblem:Awakening. Her dad is the typical playboy, hits on women 24/7 dude.
Now, all of Soleil’s supports in game that end in marriage are male. Flat out. The only situations that could be perceived as lesbianism or bisexuality are just mild teasing towards other girls.

The best way to look at it, and it’s still shit because the entire support is *terrible* is Soleil started acting like her dad did for attention from him, and it backfired because now she can’t stop doing it and it has negatively affected her on the battlefield.

    Idk does that explain it?

a real lesbian may fall for the female version, but once the powder wore off, that feeling would drift away as they saw the male version again.

it leaves a bad taste in my mouth nonetheless.

let’s play a bit of a mental game for a moment. let’s say i met a really cute/hot guy online and began an online relationship with him. then, this person figured out they’re a trans woman AFTER she started talking to me, then proceeded to go on estrogen and became more and more feminine. eventually, my attraction would simply fade because, although her personality is the EXACT SAME, her body would eventually begin to not be attractive to me as i don’t like the female form.

if that makes sense. it’s a bit pushing it, but i hope that clarifies things a little bit. it’s not like she lied to me, or anything, she didn’t realise her feelings for her body/her innate being transgender, but after the effects of the hormone (surgeries/etc) started showing, i would simply lose sexual attraction (and thus, a relationship beyond platonic) to her.

Okay, I would probably have the same reaction so I think I understand it better but we’re talking about love and not just sexual attraction and I can’t help but think this is supposed to be a sappy love story and there wasn’t any ill intention behind it.

I think I just feel uncomfortable with the removal because like I said I really don’t think there was supposed to be anything negative about it, plus it’s such an odd storyline.

Thinking about it, it might make for a better story if it ended with her gaining the confidence to be around women. Doesn’t mean they should change it to that though.

  112. bateruchan
    January 21, 2016 at 9:12 am

A lot of love and loving relationships do have a heavy basis in sex. after all, good relationships are essentially best friends with fucking thrown in there, or, at least, that’s how i feel. maybe others don’t see it that way, but i always have. i think a lot of people idealise a relationship like this though? a lot of people are unable to have a loving relationship with someone without their sexual needs met, and in the case of a lesbian with a man (even if she fell in love with a female vision of him) it would eventually turn platonic as neither are having their needs met.

i also agree it shouldn’t be changed. i’ve given a suggestion in another comment on how /i/ would approach it, which would basically be pairing her (platonically) with female characters, from less cute to more cute, until she was over her fainting issue, but again, i would not replace it… and if i was on the localisation team, i would speak out against replacing it. my emotions and sensibilities are not the creator’s intention.

it’s not my game, so it also is not my CALL.

i’m glad i could help, at least a little. maybe my reaction is a bit overblown, but it is how i feel on the matter… and i imagine it’s how others may feel, as well. like i said, that is not a reason to scream for censorship, however.

and i also think their intention wasn’t to harm gay people (in any way), but it is a VERY vague scene and it absolutely can come off that way to some people who deal with that mentality from others in real life, is all. but i doubt the creator intentionally put that there, or even has that mentality, thus, it was likely a (harmful, to some degree) mistake.

  113. bateruchan
    January 21, 2016 at 9:13 am

    sure, whatever you say, man.

because the only people allowed to have emotions and reactions are you, and people like you, right?

  119. bateruchan
    January 21, 2016 at 9:25 am

if the work tells me to feel something different, and it fails to do so, then it is a failure on the part of the writing.

but the writing doesn’t. you have a girl who (seeminly) likes girls, gets weak-kneed and faintish at the sight of them, then falls for a guy (who, sure, looks female… until that powder wears off, that is).

that’d be like you falling for a guy who looks like a chick temporarily and then being fine with it. or girl, whatever your sexual tastes are.

now, one can say “yeah, but in the context of the previous game/this trope”, but one does not, in reality, simply force themselves into liking chicks on a whim. it’s not how that works. it CAN come off as “that pesky lesbian just hasn’t found the right man yet” (she even says he’s the only one who made her ~kokoro go dokidoki senpai~) when you read the dialogue path in the paste bin.

    it CAN.
no, it will not to people who view plenty of yuri.
no, it won’t to the people who know that trope like the back of their freckled-ass hand.

but to the uninitiated, it hits close to home, because the mentality DOES exist in real life, and it is is a mentality that shows its ugly face to real gay people, who may be playing, and know that mentality far too well.

whether you approve of their reaction or NOT is fucking irrelevant.
you are not the fucking dictator of emotions and reader interpretation. you do not get to decide how people feel. you do not get to decide how people interpret WRITING.

i am not saying you are WRONG in your interpretation. i’m saying it’s JUST vague enough to toe that line to the people who live it, so they can absolutely feel that wavering line blur and maybe it is going to hit too close to their real experience.

writing does not exist in a fucking vacuum–the person reading that writing has their own baggage brought to the table.

THAT PERSON, however, is not the arbiter of what is or is not allowed in vidya writing. just as much as you aren’t about their feelings, reactions and interpretation.

get off your high fucking horse.

It sounds like a stupid scene in the first place.
But this would be an even more stupid change.

No point in this other than pandering to the perpetually offended crowds of overly sensitive snowflakes.
It’s no different from them randomly removing religious symbols to avoid offending similarly hyper sensitive crowds of ned flanders or changing blood to sweat to appease overly concerned parents.

    It’s, in the end, censorship.

    Tell Nintendo of Japan.
I can’t get a direct email (it’s all NOA’s email addresses), but I’ve found physical addresses:
Nintendo Company, Ltd. (MAIN OFFICE, JAPAN)
    11-1 Kamitoba-hokotate-cho, Minami-ku,
    Kyoto 601-8501

    President: Tatsumi Kimishima
Senior Managing Directors: Genyo Takeda, Shigeru Miyamoto
Directors: Shigeyuki Takahasi, Staoshi Yamoto, Susumu Tanaka, Shinya Takahashi, Hirokazu Shinshi.

Give them hell, tell them you want games uncensored, unfiltered. No localization, just translation. As well as the#FireEmblemFates hashtag and other social media.

Nintendo also just opened up a Tumblr. http://nintendo.tumblr.com/ So feel free to vent your anger there.

Priority 1 is finding that email address though.

Thing is, being a gay conversion scene or not, still is censorship. A lot of people don’t like Undertale’s gay characters. Was it censored to protect their feels? No. Why a game with a point of view contary to a another segment of society should be?

There’s that legit rumor going that localizers at nintendo get promoted and payed for their work time on localizing.

Which means more work, like “culturally adapting” a part of a game equals more money for them.

So to them this is something they do for themselves, they’d got their motivations already and kotaku just gave them an excuse to go ahead and justify it more easily.

It’s an artistic and business decision to convey the meaning of a scene in a way that will not put off those who might spend money on a product.”

it’s because i can’t go to university and my languages faculty doesn’t have a japanese course.. so i’m studying by myself. also working, going to workers school, being depressed, being studying also english because it isn’t my native language, having a band, playing gigs in avenues, doing house chores, having a girlfriend, searching for a new job, developing a game and so on give me less time to practice.. anyway i can understand some basic level of conversation, can find a kanji by looking at its radicals, read some relatively easy mangas and novels and write basic phrases. but for me this is less than basic level.. i don’t know joyo kanjis and even kyoiku kanjis are difficult for me..

  201. British_Otaku
    January 21, 2016 at 6:28 pm

You could say that but word is that how clumsily the “I like cute girls to the point of getting weak at the knees” thing is handled gives room for a Bi interpretation.

That and an apparent marriage conversation with a fashion loving cute young man called Foleo. There is a lot to unearth even for me, but the end of things is that the game supported no female marriage partners no matter what she said in the dialogue.

  202. Immahnoob
    January 21, 2016 at 6:31 pm

So she has an obsession with the female beauty. I would say it’s just an exaggerated Japanese trope and nothing to do with her sexuality.

  203. bateruchan
    January 21, 2016 at 6:40 pm

everyone who says i’m blatantly misinterpreting this need to also bring this up to the people here who understand how i could have this reaction, i guess?

because as it stands, half the people who disputed me get how i could react that way (while we both agree that that reaction should not cause censorship, self-imposed or otherwise) and the other half of you are taking some fucking high horse stance and telling me i’m just flat-out wrong about something as subjective as personal experience and interpretation over media/writing.

which, imo, comes off as retarded as fuck.
i’m not a professional journalist who is meant to review shit as objectively as possible, nor have i AT ALL EVER fucking claimed that i’m being objective here.

“blatantly misinterpreted” is the biggest load of shit when the dialogue is so vague it hurts. YOU have been initiated to the trope before, i have not. and when dialogue such as

“I’m really sorry, but a little while ago, I poured some of it into your drink.” <– implies without asking, which is dumb as shit, because he could have proposed this experiment beforehand, if he was just going to spoil it immediately
"I’ve loved you since the day I saw you as a girl." <–but definitely fucking this one, coming from a girl who seemingly only likes girls as assumed by "no other man could make my heart pound like this" and by the fact she gets faintish about cute girls, where being weak-kneed/faintish is a fucking stereotypical sign of crushing on someone in anime/manga/japanese tropes.

    fucking please.

and honestly? i don't give a fuck if my feelings aren't 'grounded in any form of objective reality' to you because to most the fucks on sites like this who will knee-jerk react and shout SJW SHILL think 'objective reality' is 'my reality, no one else's' and doesn't even read why someone has the feelings they have. "FUCK! you KIND OF agreed with a tumblrina's feelings! SHILL! SJW! CENSORSHIP POLICE!" seems to be the immediate knee-jerk reaction, never stepping back and realising that someone can agree with them to SOME extent, while not being a massive extremist piece of shit like them.

and you are massively full of fucking shit if you want me to believe that you view everything, even on your first view, as neutral without any personal experience or emotion clouding your view. if you REALLY think you're that level of neutral, you need to hop off your high horse.

because the ~objective reality~ is that this mentality of "i can fix those pesky lesbians by finding them the right man" actually does exist, and isn't at all really uncommon among bigots. NO i don't believe the creator of this scene had this in mind, necessarily, but it's an objective fucking fact that some people -really fucking do believe that shit- and that this harkens to that to SOME PEOPLE who have experienced that mindset over and over and over again. it comes off as a "i can turn that pesky lesbian straight by pulling the right tricks" fantasy, whether intended or not (i don't believe it is intentional, and even if so, the game IS NOT REAL and people are allowed that fantasy as long as they don't impose it on OTHER PEOPLE).

so fuck off with your ~objective reality~ shit, because everyone's view of reality is, at least to some degree, tinted by their baggage and experience. no, this doesn't mean i can't step back and say "yes, but my experience should not be the catalyst to censorship", but to even at all imply that this mentality objectively does not exist in reality is absolute fucking bullshit.

and i am not blaming anyone who enjoys this fantasy (fetish/fantasy is allowed to exist SO LONG AS it brings no [non-consensual] physical harm to others) or the creator (i don't think it was done maliciously) or anyone else. i am FULLY AWARE it is my feelings and the feelings of those who may have experienced this, and those feelings and reactions should not be the catalyst to censorship, at all, ever. nor am i even saying you should feel bad for having a fantasy/fetish of shit like this, just that you're not allowed to impost that on real fucking people. there is a REASON i think the scene should stay in whether it makes me shiver in disgusts or not.

but to say my view is not reality and to pretend i live some fantasy life is fucking laughable, because if you think this mentality doesn't exist–and that there are gay people whose view of this scene WON'T be coloured by having experienced that mentality in the real world–then it's not ME who isn't living in objective reality: it's you.

hope you guys can feature this comment because the raging here is ridiculous.

Nintendo didn’t say they were changing ANYTHING. They said that there will be no drugging or gay conversion in the American version of the game. There was NONE in the original Japanese version either. There is no censorship, nothing is being changed, let alone removed. That e-mail was likely JUST for the people who believe that those things were present from the start, when it wasn’t.

Please look at the GaijinHunter video. He explained this misconception a few months back

It might be wishful thinking, but it could also be very possible that NoA will still follow through with the scene, just with the ACTUAL translated text so as to not imply any of the above accusations. Misinterpreting my comment too it seems. Brilliant

I never said that that mentality doesn’t exist in reality I said it doesn’t exist in the context of the game. Don’t make things up just so you can extend your little rant a bit more

You’re also assuming that I enjoy this type of content, which I don’t, or that i’d ever be enough of a GamergateTard to use the phrase “SJW shill” which is absurd, i’m not a moron

My point was simply why most people don’t care how you interpreted the content in this game because your interpretation of that specific content, NOTHING TO DO WITH REAL LIFE, is dead wrong in every way and kicking up a stink about it is a waste of everyone’s time, even you’re own if you are, as you say, anti-censorship

Your entire engagement in discussion about this topic essentially boils down to a necessity to tell the world about your feelings

Whatever happens today will never be as bad as it was during the Nes/Snes era. That was the true era of censorship. Even games like Chrono Trigger were censored on the Snes/PS1.

Every generation and every console has had games that have been censored Resident Evil1 , The Last of Us, Twisted Metal Black, The Punisher, Bionic Commando, FFIV, FFVI, Duke Nukum 3D, LOZ: Ocarina of Time, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2 (yes really), FFVI on the GBA was censorsed even more , Xenosaga 1,2,3, Xenogears, Siren Blood Curse that just off the top of my head.

Most cases you don’t even hear about it until much later. It happens mostly involving three things violence, sex or religion.

If journalists gave up looking for facts that’d be an improvement over what we got.

The facts are give to them often, you can’t be on the internet and not read them because they get reposted, but when a journalist sees the facts coming their way they close their eyes, cover their ears and run away because they don’t want no facts getting in the way of their “Story”.

~nothing to do with real life~ except consumption of media is NOT IN A VACUUM.

and i’m sorry if the tropes of ‘weak-kneed and faintish when crushing hard’ is a trope we see in all of anime and jrpgs. and, you know, you usually get pretty fucking crushy when it’s someone you like–especially sexually. jfc.

Sorry if I want to explain WHY some people will find this shit offensive, so maybe, just maybe, someone will learn why. At this point, i’m lengthening my posts so i don’t get stupid fucking accusations from the same people who knee-jerk and shout LIBERAL SCUM/SJW/SHILL all over this site because every time i don’t explain in great detail, i get this shit. i have to repeat 10x a post that i’m NOT for censorship, or people gloss over it.

clearly, my posts weren’t all to waste because a number of people have now said my explanation let them understand why some people were offended.
and holy shit, it’s not like only you and people who agree with you are allowed to comment on this post and have a giant circlejerk shouting “NO ONE IS ALLOWED TO BE OFFENDED BECAUSE I SAID SO”. because that’s exactly what it seems everyone is trying to tell me here. “your feelings/interpretation doesn’t matter because…”

even tho the text, from a girl who regularly crushes on girls, admits to the MALE MAIN CHARACTER she fell in love with the GIRL FORM of him, and that it didn’t fade just because she saw him as a guy after it faded, and that he’s the only guy (‘the right guy to fix that pesky lesbian’) insinuates shit to people from a -certain demographic- who have experienced different shit than you have, they have a right to react to that. the creator has a right to do nothing with that feedback. the localisation team’s goal should be a true-to-the-source translation and localisation of the original content how the creator wanted it to be.

it is one thing to REACT and explain why someone is bothered by this content. it is another thing to ACCUSE THE CREATOR of being malicious (i highly, highly doubt there was any malicious intent at all). that second one would be something i have to prove to you. the former is just my reaction–and i feel the need to explain why other people may be bothered as well to the people who openly say they didn’t get why.

keep lying to yourself and saying it’s ~dead wrong in every way~, though, sweetheart. it’s too bad FICTION IS OPEN TO INTERPRETATION, especially written DIALOGUE, which is open to the exact same kind of interpretation as typed-out text or a novel.

or, am i offending you by reading things in a different light than you? is that it? i have to read the shit on the page and pull my own experiences away from the content 100% (something no one can honestly fucking do) and take the words transliterally every fucking time to be ~okay~ to the nichegamer audience?

    Is that it?
it’s be an emotionless robot with no past experience and no feelings on anything unless it steps in line with the group?
i can’t be fucking mad that it got censored why simultaneously being bothered by the content that ended up censored? because i am not fucking celebrating the localisation team here, and i’ve been shitting on their choice of localisation since the beginning, where i -got my fucking ass reamed on here for pointing out the game would end up censored ages ago-, but lo and behold, here it is!

and if you don’t want me to tell the ~world about my feelings~ then /stop fucking replying/.

I don’t think I’ve bought any Nintendo games since the PS4 came out. Q4 2015 was the point where I thought they were finally going to release something to justify my continued ownership of the Wii U, but then they censored Fatal Frame and Xenoblade. And now they are censoring Fire Emblem.

I will be very unlikely to buy an NX unless it gets some incredible games on it.

What they did was find files that contained outfit data, as well as copies for each of those files with “_us” in them. They copied the original files, deleted the “_us” files, and then pasted the original files and attached “_us” on these ones. Then boom, uncensored outfits. NoA was lazy as hell with the censorship, they didn’t even bother deleting the original outfits from the game’s files.

Here’s where they started talking more about it.

As for the slider, it’s a little more complicated. They started messing with number values and stuff that’s way beyond my comprehension. The other method they found was to make a character in the US version and save it. Then in the game’s save folder, there’s data for the character. Copy that to the JP version’s save folder and load the JP game. Select you character and press X, then from there you can change the character’s bust. Save the character, dive into the game’s files, retrieve the character’s data, then put it back in the US (or EU) version’s save folder. https://gbatemp.net/threads/xenoblade-chronicle-x-undub.405092/page-12#post-5878639

Personally, I’d rather wait for a better method that’s not so outta the way.

I do, back then there was no widely available Internet, nowadays you find that Information pretty fast. I’m much more aware of it now.
Also as a german, let me tell you that you can’t even fathom the true bullshit that videogame censorship really is, and I’d hate to see that happen to other 1st world countries. It’s just the opposite of what happens in america, lewd stuff is okay, Senran Kaguara 2 (where for example in the bio of one character it says that her favorite hobby is sexual harassment) or DOAX2 for example are both in their uncensored form 12+ games here, referencing drugs might lead to an 18+ Rating but no reason to ban. Here it’s violence and references/depiction to our dark past of nazi Germany that often gets/got censored. Imagine normally gory game, with not a drop of blood.
But when the non gaming media and government attacked us german Gamers after our last School Shooting in 2009, comparing us to pedophiles and nazis, we fought back, we fought back several Jack Thompsons with more influence than the real Jack becaue they were actual politicians who wanted to ban every violent game, but we said no, the gaming media said no, the industry said no.
In the end new child protection laws were made that makes it illegal to sell a 18+ product to minors, and since then, cenorship is actually steadily decreasing here. But then the femtards come and try to fuck it all over in america, which in the end, unlike the censorship we, and only we had, will affect the entire gaming world, and all of the sudden, the gaming media says no to Gamers and even some gamer cucks suddenly agree with censorship, what the actual fuck?

And I thought it was impossible for me to be taken even more wrongly than usual by anyone on this site. Ha

Pretty much none of what you just said even remotely applies to me. Hell i’m pretty much infamous for saying shit the people around here disagree with and having them all jump down my throat for it so I hardly think that nonsense about having to conform to their groupthink matters

I simply see no value in pushing an interpretation of content which is demonstrably false onto others. It’s YOUR interpretation. You’ve acknowledged that it wasn’t the intent and thus by all standards, isn’t actually present in the game. Why attempt to convince people of it if you know it’s not technically “correct” (and i’m trying to use vague terminology here so you don’t get mad about it again)

Essentially what you’re saying is that you know it’s just how you felt about it and you don’t want censorship but deem it necessary to try to convince everyone of the pro-censorship interpretation anyway for some odd reason and to make a long story short, it just makes absolutely no sense

Hmm well if the “striptease” and lines get taken out I won’t be surprised, don’t see the big deal though there are WAY more things kids could get access to than a T rated striptease with some naughty lines and a couple game characters in underwear lmao.

    Here we go again…

I don’t mean to sound vulgar, but how many times do you think Nintendo have been raped by their own customers at this point? It’s gotta be numbering in the hundreds by now!

I’m surprised Nintendo hasn’t taken the next step and removed the ability for male characters to actually kill female characters in battle, and replaced it with a “fall back” or “the enemies been injured!” type scenario. Maybe they’ll pull an Anita and just remove the option to play as a male protagonist in all their future games. You know, for equality.

I mean, seriously! How exactly would the gaming industry handle a red pill male protagonist? Think someone like Rance, but minus the rape for obvious reasons. I mean hell, a red pill male who actually stuck up for himself and talked back to a female character who mouths off at mine (like a tsundere female character like Severa) would cause the gaming industry to have a damn meltdown with the way things are now! A male character that dares question the narrative and talks back to a poor, oppressed female character with an attitude problem? Misogyny!

Seriously though, stuff like this will only go as far as we allow it to go. The video game industry is NOT supposed to be a “safe space” for female gamers, just as it sure as hell isn’t one for male gamers. I mean, how many male characters are murdered in video games? I’m pretty sure death is far, farrrr worse than a boob or two, or a “gay conversion” conversation.

By the way, I would laugh my ass off if a female member of the Intelligent Systems team is the one who came up with Soleil”s character, as well as her support conversations. I mean, imagine the controversy if feminists and social just-us “warriors” got a woman’s artistic vision censored. Let me go to the store and buy plenty of popcorn if that’s what happened.

See, this is why I’m a proud member of GamerGate. The fact is, they can say changing the dialogue for each games region is why they censore games, but in-game images (think Tharja’s butt from Fire Emblem: Awakening Summber Scramble DLC) has absolutely nothing to do with a game’s dialogue and what is verbally acceptable in each region.

look. there you go AGAIN. i have said probably 20-40 times over all my comments that MY FEELINGS and MY REACTION and EXPLAINING those things to people is NOT a cry for censorship. i am NOT a censorship apologist. i fucking hate the fact it IS censored–if it was not, i would buy it and avoid this girl’s relationship path. that it IS means i will not buy it at ALL because i am extremely anti-censorship.

i’m explaining why some people are bothered or even offended because people are asking “b-but why?” if people ask why, i’ll answer ‘why’. that does not mean i’m for the fucking censorship.

because the general idea is “w-well i don’t feel that way so YOU’RE WRONG”.
i don’t think the original intent was to offend (or ANYTHING of the sort). that doesn’t mean that interpretation is entirely wrong–people bring their baggage with them on viewing content. it’s natural and normal. go check out the comments to that one domestic abuse game that was recently announced for more evidence. and that game is just meant to be funny, but hey, for a lot of us it hits too close to home. are you gonna go over there now and shout at those people for whom domestic violence is a stinging point and say that what they experienced is irrelevant because the creator is just being funny? i doubt it.
an interpretation is not inherently wrong just because the intention of the content was not meant to offend. it just means that person has experienced a mentality that kind of bleeds out into this particular trope, and it will (unfortunately and likely unintentionally) conjure up that negative response in that person.

however, it is the accusation of malicious intent that IS wrong, and accusing someone of bigotry with very little (to no) evidence is, you know, a little something most of us would call slander/libel.

you CAN detach interpretation from the person who wrote the content.
you CAN have a negative emotional reaction without the idea of “i don’t like this, get rid of this”.
and most importantly, one SHOULD understand their reaction–and the freedom of expression and speech given to them to write about and talk about said reaction–and realise that their emotions should not hinder or stifle the creativity of someone else’s freedom of expression and speech. in other words, if you dislike it, don’t buy it. don’t change it for your sensibilities… just don’t buy it. the market WILL decide if they deem it acceptable or not to exist.

however, don’t come to ME and start bitching ME out when other people ask ‘why’ and i answer the question for them. it’s pointless as fuck and it comes off as childish to accuse me of agreeing entirely with censorship apologists JUST because i understand where the offence is coming from and have the same initial reaction–but did not act negatively upon said initial reaction–and am willing to try to explain where the offence came from and why it exists. that’s it.

does that make it clear now? or am i still talking to a brick wall who doesn’t understand that people will react to media based on their personal experiences, even if they consciously try not to?

I never accused you of supporting censorship I questioned why you were justifyingbthe views of people who do. Which you were

Though your answer is fine, I never happened to see anyone asking “why” partly because I ignore everything the guy you were talkingvto says and partly because I thought the source of the misunderstanding and why people were bothered by it was painfully obvious

But if someone actually did ask for that explanation then by all means. Might wanna chill on the accusations and assumptions that you keep complaining others are doing to you though

And I suppose my comment was based on not seeing you mention being anti-censorship, if id seen that I would have read the rest

I actually take a pretty similar stance on articles like this a lot and get called pro-censorship for it (often by the guy you were talking to, which is why I ignore him). My mistake.
