We’ve learned (via Nintendo World Report) that a controversial scene from the upcoming western release of Fire Emblem Fates is being altered, if not outright censored entirely from the game.
The scene involves a female character, Soleil (picture above), and what many websites previously coined as a “drugging/gay conversion” scene. “In the version of the game that ships in the U.S. and Europe, there is no expression which might be considered as gay conversion or drugging that occurs between characters.” a Nintendo representative e-mailed us this morning.
The shortened version of her entire story arc is as follows:
Soleil easily gets hot and bothered around other women, fearing her ability to be “strong and cool” as a soldier. If you pair her with the male protagonist, a support conversation sees him use magic powder on her without her consent, making men appear as women and women appear as men. She winds up falling for the female version of the protagonist, and ends up being eligible to be proposed to from his male form anyway.
It’s worth mentioning we still do not know her official sexual orientation.
Nintendo did not specify how the scene would be changed, or if it would be censored completely.
Does this mean the naughty dialogue and strip-tease mechanics will remain in the game? Probably not, however we unfortunately won’t know how much of the game has been gutted out for western audiences until it ships.
