After the recent Nintendo Direct focused on Super Mario Maker 2, fans may be rather excited. That might be curtailed with the news that you cannot play with your friends online.
NintendoWorldReport recently disclosed their meeting with a Nintendo Treehouse representative at a press event. The representative confirmed that you can only play with random people online in both co-op and competitive play. This limits guaranteed multiplayer with your friends to local play.
The reasoning was that the global leader-boards for competitive play could be “compromised” when playing with friends. We assume this means your friends could intentionally fail to improve your score and dominate the leader-board. However, this limitation also extents to co-operative play, which does not have a leader-board.
Nintendo’s lack of online friend lobbies have been a bane to some in titles. What do you think? Sound off in the comments below!
Super Mario Maker 2 is launching for Switch on June 28th.
