More information about the compatible controllers for Super Mario 3D All-Stars has been revealed, including how the classic GameCube controller will not be compatible.
Super Mario Galaxy was originally on the Wii, and made use of motion controls and using a pointer to pick up and shoot Star Bits. The listing for the collection on the Nintendo website notes “Gently shake a Joy-Con™ controller to activate Mario’s Spin ability or pass a Joy-Con controller to a friend for some extra help in Co-Star Mode.”
It further notes “If playing on Nintendo Switch Lite, detached Joy-Con controllers are required and sold separately.”
Nintendo revealed to Polygon more details. “Super Mario Galaxy is supported in TV, Tabletop and Handheld Modes,” Nintendo explained. “In TV and Tabletop modes, motion controls are required for pointer functionality. In Handheld Mode, pointer functionality has been adapted to use Touch Screen.” It should be noted the Nintendo Switch Lite does have a touch screen.
As reported by GameXplain, there are also issues with controllers for Super Mario Sunshine. On the Japanese product information page, it notes the Nintendo GameCube controller is not compatible with the game.
Nintendo sell a adapter to use the classic Nintendo GameCube controller with the Nintendo Switch. However, the controller is then treated like a Nintendo Switch Pro Controller; without certain buttons and the hybrid analog triggers being treated as digital input.
In Super Mario Sunshine, players could partially depress the triggers to shoot a weaker jet of water, or build up certain nozzles’ charge time slower. It should be noted there were few moments where a weaker jet of water would be needed to progress.
The Nintendo Switch GameCube is essentially a Nintendo Switch Pro Controller within the shell of a classic GameCube controller. As such, that should function with the game.
