Subnautica dev will reveal their new sci-fi strategy game at Gamescom 2022

Subnautica

We’ve known Subnautica developer Unknown Worlds has been working on a brand-new game not like their previous titles ever since Krafton acquired them.

Instead, it will be a turn-based strategy game set in a new sci-fi world, and it will be completely different than anything that Unknown Worlds has worked on before.

Things have been relatively silent since that announcement but now Unknown Worlds confirmed at Gamescom 2022 on August 25, we will finally be able to see what they’ve been working on.

Charlie Cleveland, co-founder of the studio, confirmed they will unveil the game on the opening night livestream for the expo.

Subnautica was first announced in 2013 and went into early-access in 2014 before having its final release in 2018. Three years later, it got a sequel, Subnautica: Below Zero.

The game quickly took the world by storm as being of the iconic survival games on the market. Despite being a game that was not built around combat, a decision deliberately made by the developers, it used its environments and interesting diverse sea life to create an atmosphere that, at times, bordered on horror. It was an experience that was as fun as it was unsettling.

With new successful games under their belt, and a new owner in Krafton, it is exciting to see what Unknown Worlds will be able to accomplish with their move into the turn-based strategy genre.

Strategy games have had their ups and downs in the last two decades, and here’s hoping that a talented developer will be able to breathe some new life into it and revive that long lost love of mine from yesteryear.

Gamescom 2022 is set to kick off on August 25, 2022.
