Studio Ghibli has announced that they are still making progress on two new films, How Do You Live? and a film by Goro Miyazaki, despite the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
Originally reported by Entertainment Weekly, Studio Ghibli confirmed that progress has been steady on Hayao Miyazaki’s newest film How Do You Live? (Kimi-tachi wa Dou Ikiru ka). This had continued after its announcement in 2017.
The film is based off the 1937 story by author Yoshino Genzaburo. How Do You Live? follows the 15-year old Junichi Honda in a coming-age-of story, as he experiences spiritual growth and the hardships of the world. The film is currently expected to release sometime in 2020 or 2021.
The second film is a new project by Goro Miyazaki, the son of Hayao Miyazaki, whose previous projects include Tales From Earthsea and From Up on Poppy Hill. Not many details have been released about Goro Miyazaki’s latest film, but some details were revealed in Toshio Suzuki’s interview with Entertainment Weekly.
“Goro’s film is based on a book or story from England, and it’s a story about a very wise girl. We’ve only announced it’s going to be a new film, we haven’t announced anything yet. So, that’s as far as I can tell you now.” Toshio Suzuki also explained that the coronavirus pandemic has not impacted their work at Studio Ghibli.
The ongoing coronavirus pandemic (also known as COVID-19 officially, or Chinese Flu to others) has affected many worldwide, from businesses to public gatherings and events.
This includes postponements of GDC, the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, the physical events for EVO 2020 and Tokyo Game Show 2020, and cancellations E3 2020 (including digital events), the physical event for Gamescom 2020, and Comiket 98.
