Yesterday, we published an article about what the residents of Vatican City like to play on Steam.
A few days ago, an article on Medium popped up with some very interesting information on demographics. Here’s what I found particularly interesting.
For starters, the USA is the biggest on Steam with a whopping 22.5 million users, with a tendency to play open world games and shooters more often. The biggest region for Steam is Europe, with Russia leading the pack with 13.6 million users.
They love their World War 2 shooters and post-nuclear apocalypse games, which would explain the popularity of World of Tanks and the Metro series.
Where does Japan fit in all of this? Unsurprisingly only 1% of Steam users, seeing as they are a more console and handheld market. However, that number jumps to 4.5% with zombie related titles, even before the game gets a proper localization.
Now for the stat that has been in contention for the longest time, the male/female demographic. For the better of a year news outlets have been publishing the statistic that 51% of gamers are female. While this number does mostly come from PC games, the Steam user count is much lower.
Apparently 4% of traffic on Steam’s homepage are from women, with 50% from men. While 46% are unknown, it does a good job showing who’s more interested in core games.
The article goes over a lot more information, so if you’re interested you can always check it out here.
