Starfield will have a silent protagonist, Bethesda confirms

Starfield

One of the more controversial aspects of Fallout 4 was that the player character was actually given a voice actor. Previously, games such as The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and Fallout 3 did not contain voice acting for the main player.

After the gameplay presentation of Starfield, fans were still left wondering how dialogue would be handled in the game. And more importantly, how the playable character may or may not have speaking lines themselves.

Bethesda have now confirmed that the main protagonist of Starfield will be a silent protagonist. “Yes, dialogue in Starfield is first person and your character does not have a voice,” the developer said on Twitter.

They also confirmed in this post that dialogue will occur in first person, more akin to their older games rather than the dialogue presentation in Fallout 4.

The main reason for fans taking issue had less to do with the quality and talent behind the voices, but rather the effects that it had on the role playing aspect of the games.

As Bethesda had to record voice lines for every conversation had in-game, this naturally led to limiting the choices players can make due to the scope and budget.

Starfield is planned for release in 2023 on both PC and a console exclusive for Xbox Series X|S.
