Publisher Stardock Entertainment and developer Mad Scientist Games have announced The Video Game Machine, a brand new sandbox game for PC.
The new sandbox game is coming to Windows PC, and an early founders alpha program is set to launch on May 29th, via the game’s official website. If you buy in at $9.99, you’ll get access as a founder on the 29th.
Players will be able to make their own games and realize their dreams as a game designer, making anything from adventure titles to shoot ’em ups, side-scrollers, and more. Players will be able to select a genre, then set up its rules, and then add characters you want.

“If you play games, odds are you’ve wanted to try making one too,” said Scott Tykoski, lead designer. “The Video Game Machine is a game that lets you pick a genre, choose some rules, and unleash your inner game designer.”
There’s also a bunch of pre-made games and content so players can jump right in and edit things, or stat from a blank slate. You can naturally share your games online, and download games made by other players.
“The game has been designed to be easy enough that anyone can create their own games while still having enough power that savvy gamers can create truly unique games with it,” said Tykoski. “We’ve made the art style match the 1980s/1990s golden age and included a lot of premade graphics sets so players can be up and making their own games in minutes.”
Lastly, it’s worth pointing out the alpha launching on the 29th includes the first two genres: platformer and adventure.
