Stardew Valley Hits PS4 and Xbox One in December, Wii U Dropped for Switch

stardew valley 05-01-16-1

Independent developer Concernedape has announced the console release date for Stardew Valley, their Harvest Moon-like throwback life-sim RPG.

The game will launch for PlayStation 4 on December 13th in North America and on December 14th in Europe for PlayStation 4 – and globally for Xbox One. Pre-orders for the game launch Xbox One (globally) and PS4 (Europe only) on November 30th.

The game’s planned Wii U version has been scrapped for a new release on the Nintendo Switch.

In related news, Harvest Moon creator Yasuhiro Wada highly praised Stardew Valley, even going as far to say it carries on the series legacy. You can read more about that here.

In case you missed it, you can find my review for Stardew Valley here (I highly recommend it).

I haven’t played this, but I’ll buy it for the PS4, actually.

Esp. since I fucking loved emulating Harvest Moon for the SNES.

Hey, look. Another game I’m not going to buy.

It’ll be interesting to see how the REAL Harvest Moon fans treat SV. Right now the people who praise it as something new and innovative are people who have never actually played a Harvest Moon game (And yes, I am including the creator in this demographic since it is very difficult for a creator to judge his own work objectively)

My personal opinion is that SV isn’t even as good as the original SNES game. Let alone the all time great 64 and the various other sequels and spin offs (Including one of my all time favorite 3DS games, Rune Factory 4) that continue on to this very day.

Meanwhile, PC gamers praise SV as an all time classic because they’ve never played the series it ripped so many ideas and concepts from.

The Switch is a Nintendo platform. There also seems to be quite a lot of hype for it, it would be stupid of him not to drop support for a dying console, especially considering most people who own a Wii U also have a PC, which has the advantage of being moddable on it (not to mention any toaster can run the game either way), so there is literally no reason to get it on the Wii U.
The Switch on the other hand will be portable, which lends itself really well to a game like Stardew Valley, there is absolutely no reason not to take the decision Concernedape took regarding the Wii U version.

Hopefully Stardew manages to utterly destroy any sales Story of Seasons and “Harvest Moon” might have had on Switch.

It damn well deserves to by offering a superior product at merely a fraction of the price of those games, and for realizing that people wanted more like Friends of Mineral Town and the older games in the first place.

So you’re including the creator of Harvest Moon in the demographic who NEVER PLAYED Harvest Moon before and think Stardew Valley is new and innovative when he never even SUGGESTED such a thing?

Evidently, logical reasoning isn’t exactly your forte.:P
You’re also not one to talk about objectivity and bias.

Much of the hype and praise could be summed up as “its Harvest Moon on PC”, so your definitely wrong on peoples’ familiarity with the original farming RPG series.

Aside from the time/cost of developing it? The PS4/Xbone are essentially PCs making them easier to port to. The Wii U is a whole different beast, so I understand why they’d rather put that effort toward the system’s replacement.

I’m certain that if they spent the extra money to release it for both, it would probably sell enough WiiU copies to recoup the development cost. Which is why I don’t think that’s the issue.

Most likely the are doubling down to get the game out on Switch during it’s launch window. Would getting the game out during the Siwtch’s launch window increase the revenue of the Switch version by an amount greater than they would have made by also releasing on the WiiU after subtracting the development costs? Who knows. But I reckon that’s what they’re betting on.

  61. Travis Touchdown
    Travis Touchdown
    November 30, 2016 at 1:25 am

That’s not going to work because… well, no one is going to be buying a lot of indie games on launch window. We’ll be buying all the big new releases. I personally don’t think I’ll play anything besides BOTW for at least a month.

Why would you want Story of Seasons and Harvest Moon to fail just because you like Stardew Valley. I would think fans of this genre would want all of these games to succeed. They offer different things, and we should hope that even more games like this come out, so that we’ll have even more choices.

  63. Ankoku Tou
    Ankoku Tou

And how does this correlates to it being a scam? Or is it the fact that you have no inkling as to how Patreon works, therefore you’re running your underage mouth as usual.

    On another note,
    Fan makes game
“hurr name it something else, pretendo”
Fan makes similar game under another name
    “hurr not good enough, pretendo”
Fan gets praise from original dev
“hurr his views doesn’t matter, it’s still shit, pretendo”

You can’t win against this sour grapes rhetoric. Face it, the HM series is getting repetitive these few years. I tried Skytree and the game flow is slow and the shitty achievements for every unnecessary action just worsen it further.

RF is a good spin to the formula, however that’s developed by the now defunct Neverland, but I digress.

What would be nice is making a game ala the PS1 version or basing it off of Mineral Town, rather than making a game with unskippable handholding cutscenes.

So while you’re shitting on SV, at least the devs incorporate their own take on the formula. I’d like to see how you could do the same to a series that’s more or less the same, rathing than being the salty bitch that you are.

Stardew Valley isn’t any Indy game. It is an Indy game that is very similar to Harvest Moon / Story of Seasons, and is getting released on a console those are usually played on.

Indy games also suffer from a lot of competition given the volume of Indy games out there. Being in the launch window means higher visibility in the digital store. This mind set is what leads to silly things like Way Forward targeting a game for launch window on the Apple Watch, just in case it ends up becoming a thing.

Honestly I don’t think anything can be said definitively about what will bring the most success. It IS all speculation, even on the developers’ end. The only thing I’m reasonably certain of is by cancelling the WiiU version they can get the Switch version out that much faster. However, “First to Market” and “Worse is Better” have long proved to be gambles with good odds.

It is not at all surprising that they would gamble their prospective sales on the WiiU for a chance to install themselves as the first farming simulator on a Nintendo Platform, there from the beginning, ranked high in the shop and well reviewed, gaining additional mind share form Nintendo fans who don’t play PC games and might have only heard about it in passing.
