StarCraft Remastered Announced

Blizzard has announced a remastered version of the original StarCraft.

The game is fully remastered visually, supports thirteen languages, has Blizzard Friends and Matchmaking online functionality, as well as revised dialogue and audio. Featured above, you can view the announcement trailer for the remaster. The remaster will support 4K UHD resolutions.

Originally released back in 1998, the game quickly became a classic, as well as a benchmark for the real-time strategy genre at large. The game received an expansion pack, Brood War, later that year. Blizzard released the game’s sequel, StarCraft 2: Wings of Liberty, in 2010.

Blizzard is naturally offering Brood War with this remaster. The original StarCraft Anthology will be offered as a free download.

You can view a direct comparison of the original release and its remaster over on its official websiteStarCraft Remastered is set for a release sometime this summer, for PC and Mac.

Here’s a rundown on the remaster, via Blizzard:

Rediscover a Classic

StarCraft® Remastered upgrades the essential sci-fi strategy experience from beginning to end. Welcome back to the original game and its award-winning expansion, StarCraft: Brood War.

We’ve remastered our units, buildings, and environments, improved game audio, and broadened our supported resolutions. Illustrated interludes bring the struggles and victories of heroes like Artanis, Fenix, Tassadar, Raynor and Kerrigan to life like never before. Most importantly, the strategy gameplay that StarCraft perfected years ago remains unchanged.

Highlighted Features

  • Remastered Graphics
  • Revised Dialogue and Audio
  • Blizzard Friends and Matchmaking
  • Classic StarCraft Gameplay

Breakthrough Tech

In StarCraft Remastered, we’ve kept everything you love about StarCraft, but upgraded everything else.

  • Detailed Visuals – Zoom out for a Battlecruiser’s view of the battlefield, or zoom in to see the veins on a Mutalisk’s wings.
  • Stylized Briefings – Race-themed comic book interludes tell the original story with a fresh coat of paint.
  • Ampted Audio – The original soundtrack and dialogue, re-recorded and rejuvenated.

Real Time Strategy Restored

Command the mechanized Terrans, psi-powered Protoss, and insectoid Zerg as they vie for map control of eight unique environments. Build your base and conscript your army in a real-time, military sci-fi vision of the future.

Once you’ve finished the campaign, go head-to-head or team up with other players online. Pit StarCraft’s iconic, radically-different races against one another in the ultimate theater of war.

Return to the Koprulu Sector

The galactic story of intrigue and cosmic warfare that culminated in StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void began years ago, in the far reaches of the Milky Way. Three races—the Earth-expat Terrans, the psionic Protoss warriors, and the world-devouring Zerg—encounter each other for the first time, beginning a conflict that spans worlds (and more than 50 missions).

Don’t need to remaster what is already perfect.

Hell yeah!I hope they also work on the pathfinding because that was absolute trash.

I hope they don’t fiddle with the balance, they really screwed up SC2 with their macro mechanics(Spawn Larvae etc.) and I just couldn’t get into that game because of the enforced tedium.

the less they change, the better
stick to delivering the game with great resolution and fps, ensure crispness of graphics and audio

and make the online experience as good as it was before but modernized

don’t change anything else, not the gameplay, not the direction of the presentation, leave those as they were

“revised dialogue and audio” – this is a bit worrying.

Yeah that really stuck out to me as well. Sad that 5 years ago you’d take it to mean “new, improved, and hi-fi” but these days the first thing I think is “okay, what the hell was in the original SC that could have triggered faggots enough to warrant a script change?”

Starcraft Remastered or “How can we make this look as little like SC1 as possible”. I really don’t know what the hell was going through whoevers head that did them with some of the visual changes. Readability went to shit in an instant when they decided it was alright to change the colours.

Blizzard games have such good ass lore and atmosphere in them. I’m playing Diablo 3 now and I see why people love this company so much.

I normally try not to let bad sequels colour my perception of the original, but I just don’t know if I can put my heart into StarCraft again knowing it all culminates in Space Angel Kerrigan. Christ.

I guess this looks alright. I’ll probably give it a go eventually.

The Chinese market is now a priority. Giving away the SD version for free means that less headaches for them fighting piracy in China, internet café owners have one software license less to worry, the same for aspiring E-Sport noobs there.

I’m really afraid of very possible script changes, not to mention the art style seems weird to me. Oh well, at least the original will be for free … unless they changed it too for the triggered.

  26. Madbrainbox
    March 27, 2017 at 4:13 am

The script changes will be there to fix up the lore I think.Raynor being the commander that was unnamed in the campaign, same for Artanis taking the role of the executor and so on.

No I mean, they could, you know, amplify the redneck-ness and it would serve their purpose, doing them more diverse would actually harm their own viewpoint. I hope they dont even try.

I wish this kind of “don’t fix what ain’t broke” attitude were more common in remakes and remasters. Not everything needs “updating” outside a dollop of visual polish. Brood War’s the perfect example!

I’m not a big fan of modern Blizzard– but I’ll definitely be getting this. War2 better be next on the list!

Fellas, it’s time to give up on Western devs being actual competent. At least the so-called AAA Diversity companies.

hate to tell you but SC is dead in China( and pretty much everywhere else except SK). In China it’s all about LOL now. Last time I went to a cafe SC/SC2 were not even installed.

Yeah the way they work these days is basically a sieve forcing out any developer who isn’t willing to work below minimum wage in sweatshop conditions.
