This week’s Famitsu (via Games Talk) has an interview with Square Enix’s newly opened Tokyo RPG Factory president, Yosuke Matsuda, and their upcoming console RPG, Project Setsuna.
According to Matsuda, the game is themed around sadness, as the tentative name for the RPG derives from the Japanese word for sadness, setsunasa. Development on the game is being handled by external contractors, as well as freelancers.
Matsuda talked up the scope of the new game. “It’s important to develop new IP, however, it’s difficult to make them into big IP,” said Matsuda. “If you look at the current state of the industry, most games are developed into trilogies.”
The development cycle for Project Setsuna is reportedly going to be more brief in comparison to other RPGs that Square Enix has put out. With a launch some time next year, Square Enix will gauge the results of its launch, and make a decision to build it further into a big IP, or shelve it as a new property.
