Square Enix has filed a new trademark that suggests more throwback 2D games are coming.
The new trademarks are for both “HD-2D” and “HD2D”, both of which were filed in Europe. If you haven’t seen or played the game yet, “HD-2D” is the internal term used by Square to describe the visual aesthetic found in the 2018 JRPG Octopath Traveler.
This leads us to believe the company is probably looking into or is actively developing more games that use that visual style.
Octopath Traveler is out now on Switch. In case you missed it, you can find our thorough review here. (We highly recommend it!)
