Square Enix to Wait “Farther Down the Road” Until Focusing Exclusively on Next-Gen Consoles

Square Enix have explained during a Financial Results Briefing Session Q&A that they would not be focusing on releasing titles purely for the next generation just yet.

The Square Enix financial document was published on February 26th. Acting as an overview of a Financial Briefing on February 5th. On page 4, the Q&A segment with shareholders begins.

When asked “Could you share your thinking on the development of new titles for current- and next-generation game consoles going forward?”, President and Representative Director Yosuke Matsuda said the following:

“The next-generation consoles will have backward compatibility, so we plan for the time being to make our new titles available for both current and next-generation consoles. It will therefore be somewhat farther down the road that we release titles exclusively for the next-generation consoles.”

The Xbox Series X recently detailed their “Smart Delivery” system among other things. In short, it allows players of Xbox Game Studios titles (and other developers and publishers if they so choose) to buy a game on Xbox One, and being able to play the title on Xbox Series X.

Backwards compatibility had not been confirmed for the PlayStation 5. In fact, details have been rather slow. With Sony allegedly taking a “wait-and-see” approach to the console’s pricing, it seems they may also be taking that approach with revealing features.

Both consoles are set to launch Holidays 2020.
