Square Enix Montreal announced they’ve rebranded to a new name – Onoma – under their new parent company Embracer Group.
The company’s new name, Onoma, is the Greek word literally for referring to a “name”, so in essence it’s like calling your game developer “developer”. They noted a “rebrand squad” was formed soon after they got acquired back in May 2022.
The former Square Enix Montreal team went through a whopping 165 potential names before settling on Onoma, and the main criteria was that the name could be easily pronounced in both English and French.
“Our new brand identity will serve as an umbrella to multiple products, programs, and initiatives, each with distinct personalities,” the studio said.
Embracer Group purchased the developer from Square Enix as part of a $300 million deal, which also brings with it various IPs that the Montreal-based studio worked on, like the Deus Ex franchise and the 2014-released Thief reboot.
