Square Enix has announced Symbiogenesis, the official name for their blockchain and NFT plans – not long after selling their western studios to Embracer Group.
The new blockchain and NFT program is they describe as an NFT Collectible Art Project. This name is also the same as the trademarked listing filed not long ago by Square Enix.
Details for Symbiogenesis have remained scant outside of a release date in Spring 2023, coupled with a free browser service. The only known information for now is that it will be a self-contained world with an interactive story and large cast of characters to collect.
Speculation instantly came that the trademark was related to the Parasite Eve series, however we now know this isn’t the case. This project is considered separate from the rest of the company’s IPs.
As disappointed as fans of that game may be, it’s no surprise that the company has announced their first major NFT project with Symbiogenesis.
Aside from them already stating this to be one of their major goals after offloading major western studios, Final Fantasy VII had NFTs in the form of their Bring Arts action figures, with NFT-enabled figures for characters like Tifa and Aeris.
It’s too early to say for certainly what this project actually is, though the description given makes it seem similar to many mobile games, which revolve around collecting a large cast of characters. How blockchain and web3 technology is incorporated remains to be seen.
