SPY x FAMILY infiltrates the NYT Best Sellers

Spy x Family

Spy x Family has made a surprise appearance on the New York Times Best Sellers list (for graphic novels and manga); and not just once. Volume 8 is sitting pretty at spot number 2, with volume 2 and volume 1 making appearances near the end of the list.

Just to sate your idle curiosity for the rest of the list, a book from the new The Babysitter’s Club graphic novel series sits at number 1. Other western competition in the graphic novel sphere includes the kind of stuff you’d see being marketed at a Scholastic School Book Fair. Five Nights at Freddy’s, the work of Captain Underpants mastermind Dav Pilkey, and more.

SPY x FAMILY was this past seasons big hit, proving the usual point that manga readers tend to be a good indicator of what’s going to come out and hit it big. Titles like SPY x FAMILY, Tomo-chan is a Girl!, and Komi Can’t Communicate already had large existing fanbases both in Japan and abroad thanks to English translations.

Anya is the young daughter of Loid and Yor Forger, a family hastily put together by Loid for the purpose of an undercover mission. Yor moonlights as an assassin and is oblivious to Loid’s true intentions. Meanwhile Anya is a telepath and knows the exciting secret lives of both her adoptive parents.
