Nintendo has confirmed that Splatoon, their multiplayer shooter filled with octopi and ink shenanigans, is coming sometime in May.
A specific release date wasn’t confirmed, but we also found out about the game’s “Central Hub” plaza that unites the various worlds in the game. You first touch down in the Central Hub when you start the game, while Inklings, the playable characters, will be shown.
These characters come from all over the Miiverse, and you’ll see them walking around, waiting to be chatted with. There’s a tower in the center of the plaza that lets you connect with the game’s online multiplayer component.
Each Inkling comes with their own weapon of choice, and outfit to boot. You can buy new equipment at the shopping center with money that you’ve earned through multiplayer matches. Within the shopping district you’ll find a weapons dealer that is run by a militaristic crab – alongside clothing, shoe, and headgear shops.
Any equipment that you’ve bought can be swapped out at any time from within the plaza. You’ll be able to equip three weapons at a time: your main, sub, and special weapons, each featuring different amounts of damage and shooting styles.
Finally, you’ll be able to enhance your Inkling’s stats (strength, speed, etc) via equipping various items like clothing, shoes, and headgear. You can even view other players’ equipment as you peruse the central hub.
