Phenomic’s Spellforce series was one of the first big European CRPGs to come out during the renaissance of the last decade, but with Phenomic closing shop and the game receiving several very harshly-critiqued expansion packs, the hope fans had of a proper sequel diminished.
This changed today, when Publisher Nordic Games revealed they had created an entirely new studio that they will task with making the long-awaited third title in the series. That studio, Grimlore Games, is based out of Munich and is currently seeking help, according to their website.
With the expansion packs having been less-than-stellar, many fans were understandably worried that this would be an attempt to cash in on the name. To quell any fears people may have, Nordic Games issued a statement saying:
Grimlore Games comprises of experienced developers, graphic artists and designers who have worked on titles including The Settlers 2, Knights and Merchants, Cultures and—of course—SpellForce 2. The rich talent pool in Munich was a key factor in deciding the new studio’s location. Many young and highly skilled developers gather in Munich who, in the coming months and years, will complement the core team at Grimlore Games. The studio will focus on PC games for core gamers, specifically the role-playing and real-time strategy genres.
There isn’t much else known about Spellforce 3 at this time, but you can be sure we’ll be keeping an eye on their website for any further details.
