Spellcrafter Hits Greenlight, Introduces Gesture-Based Spellcasting

It takes a lot to differentiate your game from other similar titles on large indie platforms like Kickstarter or Steam Greenlight, and it seems like every garage developer is scrambling to come up with new ideas to grab a piece of the lucrative gaming pie. One new game that just started asking for votes on Steam Greenlight is Jujubee’s Spellcrafter.

While it looks like your ordinary turn-based fantasy RPG, there is one small twist that sets it apart from the standard fare you might be used to seeing. Instead of merely casting spells from a drop down menu or a series of hotkeys as you normally would, Spellcrafter has you writing symbols on the screen in order to call forth your character’s magic. This gesture based system forms the crux of the game and promises to add urgency to their turn-based system.

For those old enough to remember, Arkane Studios’ first game, Arx Fatalis, used a system similar to this. In Arx, you had to queue up spells on the screen using hand gestures, and while clever it was often hard to do in the heat of first person real-time combat. Hopefully Spellcrafter‘s designers take that into account when developing their own game.

The developer states on their Greenlight page that Spellcrafter should be available by the 3rd Quarter of this year and will ship with three full acts with no F2P mechanics or In-App-Purchases.
