Speed Racer 4K launches in May

Speed Racer 4K

As promised, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has finally confirmed a street date for when their Speed Racer 4K remaster is hitting the market.

The new Speed Racer 4K remaster will finally be available globally on May 19th via retailers like Amazon, GRUV, and more. A swanky SteelBook was available to preorder but is mostly sold out.

While the original Blu-ray release was visually stunning already, its audio track was sadly lacking the punch its engines deserved. The new 4K remaster packs not one but two lossless audio tracks, a Dolby Atmos-True HD track and a DTS-HD Master Audio track – so our home theaters will be put to the test.

Alongside news of the 4K remaster’s launch date is the wonderful news that Speed Racer will actually be shown in theaters again in its full ultra-HD glory. Fans can expect the film to be shown in theaters during the week of April 25th in 225 theaters nationwide via Flashback Cinema, and in IMAX!

Originally premiered in what will be 18 years ago by the time its 4K is released, Speed Racer starred Emile Hirsch as the titular Speed Racer with Christina Ricci as his girlfriend Trixie, John Goodman as Pops Racer, Susan Sarandon as Mom Racer, and more. The film recreated the style, characters, and story of the original manga from the 1960s.

Here’s the official description for the new release:

The Wachowskis bring a classic anime to the big screen: Matthew Fox, John Goodman, Christina Ricci and Susan Sarandon star with Emile Hirsch as Speed Racer! Fearlessly hurtling down the track, careening around, over and through the competition in his thundering Mach 5, Speed Racer (Emile Hirsch) was born to race cars. But when Speed turns down a lucrative offer from Royalton Industries, he not only infuriates the company’s maniacal owner (Roger Allam) but uncovers a terrible secret–some of the biggest races are being fixed by a handful of ruthless moguls! The only way for Speed to save his family’s business and the sport he loves is to beat Royalton at his own game. With the support of his family (John Goodman and Academy Award winner Susan Sarandon) and his loyal girlfriend, Trixie (Christina Ricci), Speed teams with his one-time rival–the mysterious Racer X (Matthew Fox–“Lost”)–to win the race that took his brother, Rex Racer’s, life: the death-defying, cross-country rally known as The Crucible.
