Retro shooter Sovietborgs still pursuing funding goal

Sovietborgs

Throwback run ‘n gun shooter Sovietborgs only has a week left to reach its funding goal over on its Indiegogo campaign.

Retro Sumus, an immutably retro indie studio known for their 2021 Dreamcast release Xenocider, have thus far accumulated only €30,164 out of the desired €48,000 funding goal. The funding campaign had started on June 25th and is set to on on August 25th.

Sovietborgs is a Chaos Engine-inspired top-down run-and-gun title planned to be developed for Sega Genesis, Sega Dreamcast, MS-DOS and NeoGeo. Players will be commanding a 3-sovietborg squad tasked with clearing out the mutant capitalist menace across the globe.

There are hints of Gauntlet and other contemporary top-down shooters seen here and there, like the enemy spawners that will keep spewing communism-resistant chickens until they are dealt with.

If you wish to donate to this project, you still have 7 days to do so on their Indiegogo page. And if you just want to get a feel for the game, they have a demo available.

Here’s a rundown on the game, plus some gameplay:

Retro Sumus is a small development team located in Spain and Estonia. We are professionals in different fields who got together to revisit genres and concepts we felt were underused, or not explored in depth back in their time. Because, really, why not?

Our previous game, Xenocider for Dreamcast, launched in January 2021. Conceived as a love letter for classics like Space Harrier and Sin & Punishment, it was an ambitious project that brought the first new 3D game to the console in over 15 years. Our team members have also been involved in other indie projects like Pier Solar, Ghost Blade, and the Dreamcast releases of Flashback and Fade to Black.

Players take control of a squad of 3 Sovietborgs, with the goal being to explore this devastated world that’s left and wipe out the monsters and rebel factions that patrol the land. The main action is displayed from a top-down perspective, inspired by titles like The Chaos Engine, Jurassic Park, or Gauntlet.

The game features pre-rendered graphics that were developed using similar techniques to classics like Donkey Kong Country and Vectorman, while its music takes inspiration from the Red Alert and the Jungle / Urban / Soviet Strike series. Sovietborgs also includes shmup-like bonus stages and hectic battles against huge, mutant bosses!
