When Sony confirmed that Playstation Vita TV would be coming to the west at E3 2014, they curiously dropped the Vita prefix in the name of the console. Many Playstation Vita fans were worried, but this could also be related to Sony itself saying the Vita is now an “extender of the Playstation 4.” But I digress.
Now we’ve caught wind of Sony Japan actually trademarking Playstation TV, which can very well mean they’re dropping the Vita name in their home country as well. The console is still being sold in Japan as Playstation Vita TV, meaning that a possible full re-branding of the hardware is coming.
What could this mean for the Playstation Vita itself, in both the west and in Japan? Considering the hardware is essentially a non-portable Vita that can output to a television, it could be one of the final nails in the Vita’s coffin.
