If you’ve ever created an online account with a funny name and many years later down the road thought that the name “ChickMagnet69” no longer suited your refined and mature current self, you probably ran into the problem that many PSN users have now. Though Xbox live lets you change usernames for $10, PSN has never allowed for such an option.
Apparently this is a bigger issue than even I thought, since a discussion on the Playstation forums about adding such a pay feature has caused an explosive response. As a matter of fact, well over 20,000 users voted it up (22,245 as of this writing) and it’s the #1 most requested feature request on the site.
I know I ran into this myself when the name I registered for PSN was one I was famously known for on another site, which was something I wanted to change when I was no longer affiliated with that site or the associated account. Wanting to change the name to something else to sever my ties with that persona, I was forced to forfeit my entire account, saved game files and associated trophies and create an entirely new one.
Sony has been rather nice about listening to their fans as of late, so this could very well end up being implemented.
