There are no secrets about Sony’s plans for creating more live service titles over the course of the next few years. They’ve made numerous moves towards finding those to develop such titles recently, including their acquisition of Bungie.
What isn’t know yet is what exactly those live service titles will be. However, speaking with GamesIndustry.biz, PlayStation Studios head Hermen Hulst stated that Sony aims to target a variety of genres, release schedules, and audiences.
“There is a risk that we talk about ‘live service’ in generic terms – as if it is a single genre, or even a single business model.” Hulst said. “PlayStation Studios are making a variety of games that could be referred to as ‘live services’, targeting different genres, different release schedules, and at different scales.”
While it might be easy to think of certain genres when thinking of live service titles, such as shooters with the popularity of games like Fortnite, CS:GO, etc, there are also other popular games such as Rocket League that fall under a different style.
Of course this doesn’t lend much in the way on what type of live service games Sony is targeting in general. They’ll still likely have a shooter among the dozen planned, but players of different tastes will certainly have something else to look forward to.
