The official reveal for God of War Laufey sparked mixed reactions among players, but it also raised one big question: what does this mean for Kratos?
According to Santa Monica Studio, the answer is simple. Kratos remains a central part of the franchise’s future.
Speaking in a recent interview that was posted on PlayStation’s official channel, game director Ariel Lawrence and Sony Santa Monica boss Cory Barlog made it clear that the team has no plans to move on from the legendary Spartan.
Both main staff talked up God of War Laufey but addressed the new protagonist, saying they simply can’t stop telling stories about the original series protagonist Kratos.
The comments come shortly after the announcement of God of War Laufey, a new entry focused on Faye, the wife of Kratos and mother of Atreus. Rather than serving as a traditional prequel, the game takes place in the mysterious “Everywhen”, an afterlife realm where gods from different mythologies continue their conflicts beyond death.
The story also runs alongside events from the Norse saga and promises to reveal more about a character who played a major role in shaping the series despite rarely appearing on screen. Gameplay shown so far highlights a more agile combat style centered around Faye’s abilities, combining precise weapon attacks with mystical powers.
Naturally, the reveal has reignited speculation about where the franchise could go next. Egyptian mythology remains one of the most requested settings among fans, and while Laufey may contain broader mythological connections, Santa Monica Studio has stopped short of confirming anything beyond the upcoming game.
God of War Laufey is in development for PS5, though a release date wasn’t announced.
