Sony: PS5 Games Won’t Support VR, No VR Support for at Least 2 Years

Sony Interactive Entertainment has confirmed PS5 games won’t support virtual reality at launch, and official VR support for the console is quite a ways off.

The company confirmed (via UploadVR) the PlayStation 5 versions of both Hitman 3 and No Man’s Sky won’t support VR natively, so you’ll have to resort to only playing them on PS4 if you want VR support. It is worth mentioning No Man’s Sky will support VR on PS5 if you’re playing the PS4 version, via backwards compatibility, as will Hitman 3.

The Sony representative then added, “We have not announced PS5 titles for PS VR.” This echoes a very recent comment from Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan (via WaPo), who basically wrote off VR support on PS5 for the next several years.

“Will it be this year? No. Will it be next year? No. But will it come at some stage? We believe that,” Ryan said when asked for an update on potential VR on the PS5.

This means we won’t be seeing virtual reality support on PlayStation 5 until 2022 at the very earliest, and that’s if we’re simply getting support for the existing PS VR hardware. It remains unclear if Sony will release updated VR headset models.

The PlayStation 5 will launch November 12th in the US, Japan, Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, and South Korea. For the rest of the world, it will launch November 19th. The PlayStation 5 will cost $499.99 USD, while the Digital Edition will cost $399.99 USD.
